It was the final UFC event under Zuffa ownership, which began in January 2001. The company subsequently announced its sale to WME-IMG, an American talent agency with offices in Beverly Hills.
Background
The 200th UFC numbered event, traditionally held on pay-per-view by the UFC, was the first UFC event hosted at the new T-Mobile Arena; it was the marquee event of UFC's annual International Fight Week and marked the second time the UFC promoted three events on consecutive days.
A welterweight rematch between The Ultimate Fighter 5 winner and former lightweight title challenger Nate Diaz and UFC Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor was originally promoted to headline the event. The pair previously fought earlier in the year at UFC 196 where McGregor had been preparing to challenge Rafael dos Anjos for the UFC Lightweight Championship. Diaz stepped in at welterweight for dos Anjos on 11 days' notice and submitted McGregor in the second round.
UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion Miesha Tate was booked to defend the title against top contender Amanda Nunes. This fight eventually became the main event.
Due to Conor McGregor fighting outside the featherweight division, UFC booked an interim featherweight championship rematch between former champion José Aldo and former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. Aldo previously defended his title against Edgar via unanimous decision in 2013 at UFC 156.
Former two-time heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez faced Travis Browne to open the main card.
Stacked under-card
Former Women's Bantamweight title challenger Cat Zingano and The Ultimate Fighter 18 winner Julianna Peña headlined the preliminary card.
The UFC booked so much star power for the event that the preliminary cards featured three recent champions and several former title contenders.
- Former UFC Welterweight Champion Johny Hendricks faced The Ultimate Fighter 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum. Hendricks missed weight by one quarter of a pound, at 10:00 AM, the end of the new early weigh-in time window. He forfeited 20% of his fight purse to Gastelum.
- Former UFC Bantamweight Champion T.J. Dillashaw faced Raphael Assunção. Assunção previously defeated Dillashaw in a split decision in 2013 at UFC Fight Night 29.
- Former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Gegard Mousasi was expected to face Derek Brunson, but on June 19 Brunson pulled out due to injury and was replaced by Thiago Santos.
The Ultimate Fighter 1 winner and former lightweight title challenger Diego Sanchez faced Joe Lauzon, Sage Northcutt faced Enrique Marín also at lightweight, and lightweights Jim Miller and former PRIDE Lightweight Champion Takanori Gomi opened the event.
Conor McGregor drops out
On April 19, Conor McGregor shocked the industry when he tweeted his alleged retirement. UFC President Dana White clarified that McGregor was pulled from the event due to his refusal to attend a Las Vegas press conference that week, because "he was in Iceland training and didn't want to ruin his preparation for the fight". McGregor released a statement two days later; he recanted his retirement and requested the UFC to allow him to focus on the fight preparation this time, as he felt that the media obligations had distracted his training focus for the previous fight. He was ready for the event and would attend a scheduled New York press conference. The UFC did not relent, Nate Diaz refused to fight anybody else, and McGregor lost a rumored $10 million purse.
On April 27, the UFC announced the new headline: a light heavyweight championship title unification rematch between champion Daniel Cormier and former champion Jon Jones, who was the interim champion. The pair fought in January 2015 at UFC 182 where Jones defended the title via unanimous decision. Subsequent to that victory, Jones was stripped of the title and suspended by the UFC due to his involvement in a hit-and-run incident. Cormier stepped in for Jones at UFC 187 in May 2015, and defeated Anthony Johnson to win the vacated title. Jones was expected to rematch Cormier at UFC 197 in April 2016, but Cormier pulled out due to injury and Jones defeated his replacement Ovince Saint Preux for the interim title.
Brock Lesnar revealed, Ariel Helwani banned
On June 4, during the UFC 199 event, MMAFighting.com reporter Ariel Helwani broke the news that former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar was booked to return at UFC 200. The UFC confirmed the news shortly after, via a teaser video clip on the UFC 199 broadcast, but Helwani's scoop earned him a prompt ejection from the event and a lifetime ban from covering future UFC live events. Facing condemnation from the media community, the UFC reinstated his media credentials, warning that "recurring tactics used ... extended beyond the purpose of journalism".
Brock Lesnar faced 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix winner and former interim title contender Mark Hunt in the co-main event, in Lesnar's first fight since December 2011.
Jon Jones tests positive, Anderson Silva steps in
The event suffered another major setback just three days before the date, when Jon Jones was removed after USADA notified him of a potential anti-doping policy violation in an out-of-competition sample collected on June 16. Jones apologized for the incident, but denied knowingly taking any illegal substance, and declined to specify the substance(s) reported in the failed test. His 'B' sample also tested positive for the same substance(s) and Jones faces a potential two-year suspension from MMA.
Daniel Cormier declared he would still fight if an opponent offered to him "made sense". During the Thursday night UFC Fight Night: dos Anjos vs. Alvarez event broadcast, the UFC announced that former UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva would replace Jones on two days notice and face Cormier in a three-round non-title light heavyweight fight.
Lesnar vs. Hunt was briefly promoted as the replacement main event, but then the already scheduled women's bantamweight championship fight between champion Miesha Tate and top contender Amanda Nunes was established as the main event, and Lesnar vs. Hunt remained as the co-main event. Lesnar also headlined UFC 100, and with Jones' absence, Brock Lesnar and Jim Miller remained as the only two fighters to compete at both milestone events.

The final attendance was 18,202, a record for Nevada, which had hosted 104 prior UFC events.
