Steven Universe follows the adventures of a young boy named Steven and the three alien warriors Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl, who are together known as the Crystal Gems. Their ultimate goal is to protect the Earth from colonization by other members of the Gem species. In the meantime, Steven must try to harness his own magical powers, which were inherited from Rose Quartz, his mother and the past leader of the Crystal Gems, while finding balance between being half-human and half-Gem.
This musical episode deals with Greg's newfound fortune, and Pearl having trouble letting go of the loss of Rose Quartz. At the end of the previous episode, "Drop Beat Dad", Greg received a check of $10 million after one of his songs became a success. In this episode, to celebrate his success, Steven and Greg take a trip to Empire City, and Pearl comes along. However, Pearl still heavily resents Greg for taking Rose, the love of her life, from her, and essentially being the cause of Rose's death. Steven tries to show Pearl and Greg that they have more in common than they think - they both love, and are loved by, Steven, the product of Rose.
Plot
The episode begins with the Pepe's Burgers commercial on screen being sung by Marty to the tune of "Comet" ("Pepe's Burgers Jingle"). The commercial ends and Steven is seen in the van in awe because that's Greg's song. Greg then brings up how Marty had given him the $10,000,000 because Marty had sold his song as a burger jingle. Pearl then mentions that Rose would have loved this song. Greg and Steven ask each other what they can do with their newfound wealth and how the best things in life are free. ("Don't Cost Nothin'"). Steven brings up going on a vacation in the song. Liking the idea, Greg digs through his van and finds a picture of Empire City, Greg then tells Steven about the glamour of the big city ("Empire City"). By now Pearl has moved inside. Steven and Greg pack throughout the song. Suddenly, Steven suggests Pearl join them. There's an awkward moment when Pearl and Greg don't want that to happen, but Steven insists. Steven states it will be just the three of them and awkwardly adds in "and don't forget Mom!" As he pulls up his shirt revealing his gem.
Driving to Empire City, they arrive at Le Hotel, Greg cunningly appears at the counter and hands the front desk clerk his business card reading, "Mr. Greg: Bazzzillionaire". Steven appears and smirks like Greg and hands him a wad of cash. Greg, Steven, and Pearl are checked in to the hotel by the very willing staff ("Mr. Greg"), basically singing about the fun they're having. Greg sings "So dance with me, just say-" and then Pearl yells, "No!". Embarrassed, she leaves, and an employee shouts, "Boo! You ruined the song!".
While Greg & Steven were sleeping Pearl walks into their room. Pearl reaches for a rose and starts singing about her feelings about Rose & Greg, her regrets & her inability to move on even after Rose has chosen Greg ("It's Over"). At the very end, it shows Greg & Steven woke up from their sleep and heard Pearl singing. Greg leaves the room saying "Nothing is going to fix this, is it?". without looking at Steven or Pearl. Pearl then says "I shouldn't have come along", but Steven says "This is exactly why I brought you".
Greg is seen sitting at the hotel bar, eating a glass of cherries. Steven appears holding Pearl's hand, who is grinning nervously. Greg and Pearl sweat nervously when piano music is played rapidly. An employee is seen playing and Steven gets on the piano after bribing the man with more cash. Steven plays the instrument along singing a song ("Both of You") urging Greg and Pearl talk to each other about what happened with Rose and dance. Greg & Pearl successfully talk about their feelings focusing on their mutual loss & their love for Steven & Rose.
The waiters cheered and the innkeeper gives Greg the bill ("Don't Cost Nothin' Reprise"). As they leave Empire City, Greg & Pearl are talking, clearly on better terms, while Steven sings ("It's Over").
Music
This episode is almost entirely musical. There are seven songs featured in this episode, ranging from quick jingles to a very upsetting, passionate solo from Pearl that lasts over two minutes in length.
