Nintendo Switch (ニンテンドースイッチ, Nintendō Suitchi) is an upcoming video game console in development by Nintendo. It was first announced with the codename "Nintendo NX" at a joint press conference with Japanese mobile gaming provider DeNA on 17 March 2015, held to announce a business alliance between the two companies. It is currently scheduled for release worldwide in March 2017.

When it was originally announced, Nintendo stated that the new console would be a new concept, and that it would not be a direct replacement of the existing Wii U and 3DS product lines. In an interview, Nintendo company president Tatsumi Kimishima stated that the Switch would "have a larger impact than the Wii U", also stating that he believed sales of the Wii U would slow following the release of Switch, but reiterated that the platform will not be a successor to the Wii U.

Hardware

Nintendo Switch is designed as a hybrid between a handheld video game system and a home console; the main system, referred to as the "Switch console", is a tablet with two detatchable "Joy-Con" controllers. The controllers can be used whilst attached to the Switch console (similarly to the Wii U GamePad), or they can be removed and held independently of the console, either separately in each hand (similarly to a Wii Remote and Nunchuck), attached to a grip to provide a traditional gamepad form factor, or as two separate controllers for multiple players. It will also support a wireless standalone gamepad known as the Switch Pro Controller. Switch will support wireless multiplayer via multiple systems, for example, allowing four players to play using two Switch systems. The Switch console can be inserted into a docking station known as the Switch Dock, which allows the console to be used as a home console attached to a television.

Exact specifications have not been officially announced, but Nvidia confirmed that Switch uses a system-on-chip from its Nvidia Tegra family of products "based on the same architecture as the world's top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards", and a custom API. Games distributed at retail will be stored on cartridge-like GameCards, similar in design to those used for Nintendo DS and 3DS games.

Games

During its official unveiling, Nintendo confirmed that a number of major third-party publishers and developers had committed to developing games for Nintendo Switch, including 505 Games. Activision, Arc System Works, Atlus, Bandai Namco Entertainment, Bethesda Softworks, Capcom, Codemasters, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, From Software, Frozenbyte, Koei, Konami, Level-5, Platinum Games, Sega, Spike Chunsoft, Square Enix, Take Two Interactive, Telltale Games, THQ Nordic, and Ubisoft among others.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, originally announced as a Wii U exclusive, is being developed for both Wii U and Switch. Prior to the console's 20 October 2016 reveal, several third-party titles were confirmed for Switch in 2016, including Just Dance 2017, and Project Sonic 2017. The game's reveal trailer showcased footage from potential new titles in the Super Mario, Mario Kart, and Splatoon franchises.
