Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week, for excellent work in a largely un-rewarded subject area. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Misplaced Pages Editor Retention Project) |
User:Northern Antarctica submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:
- As a 6-year veteran editor with over a 150,000 edits, Boleyn has quietly been creating tons and tons of disambiguation pages. This is an important area of work, but it doesn't generally get much attention, so Boleyn is probably well overdue for a bit of recognition. After all, users who faithfully work to improve the encyclopedia — yet don't get very much of the limelight — are the people that this award was designed for.

Your advice please...
Hello!
You are the disambiguation guru. It used to be piped links were discouraged on disambiguations pages. That made sense to me. Is that still what is recommended? HMS Toronto has several piped links. Should I unpipe them?
Thanks! Geo Swan (talk) 20:13, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi, Geo Swan, I hope you're well. Yes, WP:PIPING is still discouraged, so that readers can see the real link and have less chance of ending up at a disambiguation page again by mistake, and can more easily go directly to the right page. On the page you mentioned, some of the links need a blue link on their line (WP:DDD). Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 20:20, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

A DAB policy question
Since you are the DAB Page Queen, I wonder if you could answer a question for me. While disambiguating links, I often stop to edit the dab pages themselves. When I ran across one that added foreign text to some of the links, I removed the non-English characters, thinking it was an anomaly. But now I've found another such page, and it made me wonder if I was too hasty on the earlier edit. MOS:DAB had nothing to say about it. Is there any established policy about having non-English names or words on dab pages? How do you handle these? TIA — Gorthian (talk) 04:03, 14 May 2016 (UTC)
Hi, Gorthian. I don't like these, but I don't always remove them. I think the most relevant part of MOS:D for them is MOS:DABENTRY: Keep the description associated with a link to a minimum, just sufficient to allow the reader to find the correct link. In many cases, the title of the article alone will be sufficient and no additional description is necessary. Often it is perfectly clear what the difference is and the translation is superfluous. However, with languages I don't understand, I err on the side of being generous when deciding whether it is definitely unneeded. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 17:01, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you for your thoughtful response; that's very helpful. — Gorthian (talk) 18:23, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
Vladimir Popov (economist)
Hello, you reverted the addition of a link to a (non-existing) page "Vladimir Popov (economist)", may I ask you to justify this removal? I added this link after looking for information on said person and noticing that he did not have a page. I believe he is a sufficiently important academic to be cited on Misplaced Pages which you can check here: Thank you. Thibaut Lienart (talk) 09:52, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
Hi, ThibautLienart, thanks for you message. In my edit summary, I linked to MOS:DABRL, which if you click on it says it better than I probably can. The economist may well be notable and deserving of an article, but a WP:DISAMBIGUATION page is there essentially as an index of existing WP articles and topics mentioned within them. When/if an article's created, it would then be added to the dab. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 10:58, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
- Ok thanks for taking the time to explain Boleyn, I understand it's not a particularly good thing to add links to non-existing articles, I guess my error was induced by the Vladimir popov (actor) present on that disambiguation page. Thibaut Lienart (talk) 11:39, 11 August 2016 (UTC)

Please do not remove maintenance templates from pages on Misplaced Pages, as you did to Army (Ellie Goulding song), without resolving the problem that the template refers to, or giving a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. Your removal of this template does not appear constructive, and has been reverted. Thank you. Chase (talk | contributions) 21:57, 9 July 2016 (UTC)
Chasewc91, that's ridiculously heavy-handed. I gave a clear reason in my edit summary - you disagreed and reverted - absolutely fine, but don't send formal templates warning me and saying I didn't give a valid reason. Boleyn (talk) 06:52, 10 July 2016 (UTC) =
Peter Moffett (drummer)
Respectfully, I am puzzled by your recent of my edit. I respect your expertise in this area so I am asking for my own education: Since {{other people}} is a hatnote (see WP:HAT#Other people) would you please clarify for me what is the issue with using it to point to the DAB page that lists the Peter Moffett (drummer) article? Logic would suggest that if an article is listed on a DAB page then the article should have a hatnote back to that page in case the reader arrived at the article in error. Since we do not (yet) have a plain old Peter Moffett page WP's autosearch will likely land the searcher on the drummer's page every time. Of course once we actually have such a page (as you have recommended) then eliminating the hatnote makes more sense. Koala Tea Of Mercy (KTOM's Articulations & Invigilations) 20:13, 26 July 2016 (UTC)
PS: On a side note thank you very much for cleaning up the DAB page. Really nice work. Koala Tea Of Mercy (KTOM's Articulations & Invigilations) 20:13, 26 July 2016 (UTC)
Hi, Koala, thanks for your message. I think the relevant parts of WP:HATNOTE are: Only mention other topics and articles if there is a large possibility of a reader arriving at the article either by mistake or with another topic in mind. Also WP:NAMB: In many cases it is preferable not to have a hatnote when the name of the article is not ambiguous. {For other uses, see water (disambiguation)}. Water' (Chinese: 水; pinyin: shuǐ), is the low point of the matter, or the matter's dying or hiding stage. Water is the fifth stage of Wu Xing... Here, the hatnote can be removed. A reader who is following links within Misplaced Pages is unlikely to end up at Water (Wu Xing) if one were looking for other meanings of water, since water does not redirect there. I would say this is a similar example - anyone typing in or clicking on Peter Moffett (drummer) will not be looking for any of the other entries, as none of the others have that name and are drummers. I hope that makes sense, but please let me know if not. Thanks, Boleyn (talk) 20:32, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

Your opinion please...
You are my goto expert on disambiguation. One of the entries in the disambiguation page FNU contained a piped link. Was my attempt to fix it correct?
Thanks! Geo Swan (talk) 12:56, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Hi, Geo Swan, nice to hear from you. It was a good change, I made 2 very minor adjustments. I added back link to subsection of article to get readers there faster, so although it's piped, everyone can see which article it leads to. I also moved the link to the beginning of the sentence, as the reader gets to it first and may not then have to bother reading the rest of the sentence if it's the right one. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 13:57, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
MOS:DABRL
Hi. You reverted two of my recent edits to disambiguation pages ( and ). The printmaker John Lodge (active 1782-1796) is here. I think you are right in that case that there will never be an article about him (though if there was an existing article about another artist called John Lodge, would it be acceptable to have a hatnote telling people not to confuse the two?). The case of Matthew White Ridley (1837–1888) may be more debatable. See here. There is at least one case where Worldcat has put the wrong Matthew White Ridley on one of their catalogue entries (see here). I think flagging up the existence of the artist with the same name as the baronets is useful. What do you think? (I am going to ask someone with a bit of knowledge about art history to see what they think.) Carcharoth (talk) 17:27, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- Checking 'what links here' for Matthew White Ridley, I see that the artist is listed at User:Magnus Manske/Your Paintings/R and Misplaced Pages:GLAM/Your paintings/Painters born 1825-1849. But I can't find him mentioned in existing articles, and I can't find any examples of his works at Commons. Carcharoth (talk) 17:41, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
Hello, Carcharoth. I have no idea if these subjects are notable or not, but WP:DISAMBIGUATION pages are there solely as a navigational aid - to help a reader find what they are looking for within a WP article, by having an article themselves, or being mentioned in an article (MOS:DABMENTION). If there isn't any, it should show up a blank. Hatnotes are similar, also just to other WP articles, and so hatnotes shouldn't have no navigation (blue links) or external links. Being listed at the pages you mentioned wouldn't mean that they should be included, because these aren't articles. However, they are a reasonable indication that they may be notable; you might want to consider writing a short article on them, or requests one at Articles for Creation. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 20:12, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks, I will see what I can do regarding Matthew White Ridley. I would have found it helpful to have him listed there, purely to know that the Matthew White Ridley I was looking for wasn't one of the ones already listed there. Carcharoth (talk) 23:52, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
Salters and Steamships
You may have noticed the slip I made here. That was part of gathering a lot of Salters that I put here. I know those surname pages aren't disambiguation pages, they are set index pages, but Salter is a disambiguation page for now (because it has other items). What is the best thing to do with those surname pages - they are never up-to-date, but that one had so many missing I thought someone needed to try and pull them all together. Are those pages really useful? I used it to try and find a "Justice Salter", so I suppose it helped a bit, though the judge wasn't there... One other disambiguation issue I came across today. I was trying to identify an SS Amsterdam and looked at SS Amsterdam (and also at SS Nieuw Amsterdam, which wasn't very helpful either). It turns out that the ship I was after was this one that plied the route to New York and was much earlier than the ones named on Misplaced Pages. Is it OK to put this one on the disambiguation page? Carcharoth (talk) 23:24, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
Hi, Carcharoth. I've created a separate Salter (surname) page, including your additional names. Technically, surname pages are article rather than dabs or set index pages, but they usually have so little info that they are like a dab. The list of notables is meant to be just an add-on to referenced info on the surname, which is the bit I consider most useful. The lists will often be out of date, especially for the more common names, but it gives some which readers may find interesting, I guess. I created SS Amsterdam (1879), as there wouldn' be any point adding it to the set index page without any links to take a reader too. Can you look it over and see if you can expand it, particularly on why it is notable? Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 05:46, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you. I will have a think about the ship. One other disambiguation I came across was John Bethell which could redirect to either John Bethell, 1st Baron Bethell or John P. Bethell with hatnotes at each, but what links here gives two other (article-less) John Bethells who want to claim the link as well. A John Bethell is linked from creosote: "in 1838 a patent covering the use of creosote oil to treat timber was taken out by John Bethell. The "Bethell process"...", while Chester Brown mentions a John Bethell who wrote The Noblest Triumph, while Topographical poetry mentions an 18th-century poet called John Bethell, author of Llangunnor Hill: a loco-descriptive poem. Maybe this is why John Bethell has been left as a red link? The 18th-century poet seems not very notable. The creosote John Bethell (c.1804-1867) has some notes and an obituary here. Apparently The Noblest Triumph was written in 1998 by Tom Bethell, so the Chester Brown article has that wrong (now corrected). There is also a John T. Bethell here: "Senior Editor of The American Scholar and a contributing editor at Harvard Magazine, where he was editor from 1966 to 1995.". There is also a John Bethell who is involved in music. Some other non-notable John Bethells as well. In case the sportspeople are feeling left out, a variant spelling is at John Bethel. Anyway, to avoid disappearing down the rabbit hole of Bethells any further, I think only the creosote John Bethell is notable. I was wary of creating a disambiguation page, but having found the hockey player at the 'Bethel' spelling, I wonder if having those three would justify turning John Bethell blue as a disambiguation page, and de-linking the non-notable 18th-century poet and including the creosote guy in the disambiguation page. I'll do that now, possibly creating John Bethell (inventor) as a stub. Carcharoth (talk) 07:59, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
Looks like John Bethell is a good dab now. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 09:31, 27 August 2016 (UTC)

Paul Phoenix (singer)
Hi Boleyn. You redirected Paul Phoenix (singer) to The King's Singers back in January. An IP has been trying to recreate the article, but has been reverted a number of times by different editors (including myself). I am not familiar with this person at all, so I am not challenging your redirect. I am just wondering if you would mind taking a look at the IPs version and see if there's anything there worth keeping and re-adding to the last version you redirected. Thanks in advance. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:51, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know, I've requested that the page is protected and will keep an eye on it. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 12:55, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
- No worries. The content added by the IPs appears to have actually been a copyvio, so an admin WP:REVDEL the edits. Finally, just in case you weren't aware, the article did survive an AfD at Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Paul Phoenix (singer) back in 2006, but looking through that it seems that almost all the keep !votes were made by SPAs. WP:CHEAP is fine, but not sure if this would've survived another round at AfD if you decided to bring it there instead. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:54, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
Deletion of new Alan Miller
I am a brand new "editor". My goal is to establish a page for him as a songwriter of note. He is easily researched online on Allmusic.com as the co-writer of over one hundred major label recordings. He has a recent Grammy nomination for his three songs on Mono by The Mavericks. His name appears dozens of times on cuts on artists that have pages on Misplaced Pages. Would it be possible to leave him up in red until we get his page written and posted? I promise it will have numerous citations in major news magazines like American Songwriter. Thank you so much! DanEStrimer (talk) 03:22, 11 September 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Boleyn:
- I've replied to the above editor at the Teahouse
- I think you may have AfD'd the wrong page here. Easily done! PamD 08:54, 11 September 2016 (UTC)
DanEStrimer, I've changed the incoming links which Pam noticed were going to Alan Miller the disambiguation page rather than Alan Miller (songwriter), so I could re-add it to the page - that's now done. Sorry again for not being clear the first time. You may want to create the article, but I'm guessing you work with Miller, and when there's a conflict of interests, it's often better to leave someone neutral to create it. Thanks, Boleyn (talk) 13:15, 11 September 2016 (UTC)

David Kidd
Hi - I tried to cut a small corner by adding a link to the page David Kidd (writer) from the page David Kidd before I'd actually written the page. You undid this, because the link was, at that point, dead. Now that I've written the article, would you be happy for me to reverse your undo so that it features on the disambiguation page? StenLasha (talk) 12:02, 14 September 2016 (UTC)
Of course, I've re-added it myself now, sorry I inconvenienced you. In future if you put an edit summary like 'Article being created now', it's unlikely to be undone. Thanks for creating the article, Boleyn (talk) 16:16, 14 September 2016 (UTC)
Tom Staniforth
Hi Boleyn, thanks for sorting out the Tom Staniforth page. I'd like to suggest a further fix, however, which is
- delete the page Tom Staniforth (football coach), perhaps using a
{{db-g7}}
, - create a page Tom Staniforth (footballer) with the same redirect to Gordon Staniforth#son.
The reason being that Tom is best described as a football player. His father was the coach. -- Ham105 (talk) 16:17, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying. I'm perfectly happy for you to do that, I must have misunderstood the dab entry. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 08:59, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
- Cheers. I've left Item #1 because it's not within my power to make happen, but it can stay as a surplus redirect. Item #2 is done and the hatnote within Tom Staniforth is now changed to the description proposed. Thanks -- Ham105 (talk) 16:58, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
Unlinking AfD-related articles
Hi, do you think you could actually delete things like this and entries in lists and navboxes when the article is deleted at AfD? Unlinking is pointless and just creates problems further down the line. No-one can "see also" an unlinked, non-existent article, nor navigate to such a thing, and NLIST pretty much covers the other issue. Thanks. - Sitush (talk) 08:27, 10 October 2016 (UTC)

Regarding edits on Guberman: I wanted to keep it a disambiguation page and {{surname}}
is not a disambiguation template, maybe comprise with {{disambiguation|surname}}
? And I wrote a query to find others. — Dispenser 17:17, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
Hello, Dispenser, thanks for your message. At the moment it has no entries which would make it a dab - both would be partial matches. Unless you have other entries to add? For anythin to be a dab entry, it would need to be called, or commonly known as, simply 'Guberman'. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 18:59, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
A possible Dab I just found
Here: Sam Brooks/Samuel Brooks. Wgolf (talk) 19:32, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
- I created Sam Brooks (disambiguation). I think there's a question of whether there is a primary topic here. bd2412 T 20:25, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
- Found some other ones-but seems like one of the other major DAB editors added some (I did request one to another one a while back), anyway here is another one I just found James Law. Wgolf (talk) 22:37, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
- and another one-Ken Rowe/Kenneth Rowe Wgolf (talk) 22:57, 11 October 2016 (UTC)Y
Thanks. Sam Brooks doesn't seem to have a primary topic so I've moved it. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 02:05, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
- Another one from this morning-Sean Cronin, as a note there is also one I found that is Danny McFarlane, which yes there is currently 2, however there are people named Dan McFarlane and Daniel McFarlane which are currently redlinks that have people that go to them. Wgolf (talk) 18:32, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
- BTW-found this dab page Heath Miller, seems it needs a lot of fixing (also the wikidata goes to the football player) Wgolf (talk) 20:09, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
Hi Boleyn - i only published the article from draft, and did not write it Heath Miller (concert producer) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Excessdb (talk • contribs) 21:20, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
Question
Hi. Why did you undo my revision?
I do not know what “supl” means.―PapíDimmi (talk | contribs) 21:34, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
Sorry, typo - dupl(icate) - entry already listed. We also tend not to use a hatnote as an entry within it means you can add brief info about him too. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 01:17, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
Heath Miler

Another DAB page for whenever
Sam James/Samuel James/Sammy James, I found another one but can't remember what it was, well maybe I'll remember tomorrow! Wgolf (talk) 04:27, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
A dab page for 'Show tune'?
Dear Boleyn,
I hope you are keeping well?
There are several items called 'Show tune', 'Show Tunes', etc.:
- Show tune
- Show Tunes (album)
- Showtune (musical)
- Showtunes
- Showtunes (album)
- Show Tunes, a 1995 album by Shirley Jones
Would you agree that this might justify a new dab page? If so, I'd do the donkey work but would appreciate your assistance, as some redirects and hat notes are also involved.
Very many thanks for your considered advice.
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee. 10:37, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
- Hi, Pdebee, I agree and have made a basic start at Show Tunes. I'm happy to handle redirects and hatnotes if you want to see if there are more entries to add. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 16:29, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
- Dear Boleyn,
- Thank you for your supportive feedback, and also for taking action and doing all the work!

Any time. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 18:25, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
Joseph Baena listed at Redirects for discussion
An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Joseph Baena. Since you had some involvement with the Joseph Baena redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. SSTflyer 12:56, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
Ray Schultz (APD)
yes, I added him to the dab page, went tooking for the infobox person template, and got distracted, yes. Bad wikignome. I figure you what are saying is, no article no disambiguation? Just checking, since it does look like I need an article for him; any objection to me re-adding him once an article exists? Anything else I need to fix with the way it was? I'd never done one of those before Elinruby (talk) 07:07, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Hi, Elinruby, a redlink can go on a disambiguation page, if it meets MOS:DABRL or MOS:DABMENTION. Most people who add redlinks aren't looking to create an article, so I didn't realise you were planning to, or I'd have left it in. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 11:17, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
John Galea
Hello Boleyn,
Thanks for sharing the information with me. I don't know that it was deleted several times. This was my first time when I created this page. I apologise for all the mistakes done by me. I will consider all the points which you mention on my talk page. Vineetpl7 (talk) 10:01, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, Vineetpl7, unfortunately someone's been trying to force this article onto WP for 3 years, which means it is very quickly deleted each time. If it goes through AFC, it would be treated differently. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 11:17, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Some possible DAB pages
Here are some: Amy Phillips, John Strickland, Roger Fry Wgolf (talk) 21:54, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
- And another one-Luis Cruz. Wgolf (talk) 23:35, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
- One I found by accident is Todd Miller, which despite just having one person listed as a hat note-there are quite a few people with this name listed on Misplaced Pages. Wgolf (talk) 00:51, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
- Just did one for Todd Miller, you can add more if you like. Wgolf (talk) 18:22, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
- And another: Michael Findlay/Mike Findlay Wgolf (talk) 20:32, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
- Along with Findlay, here are more I have found George Waller, Mike Shanahan, Patrick Higgins/Pat Higgins, Howard Wood, Tom Moloney, Robert Beattie. Wgolf (talk) 02:28, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

Demetrios Alexatos
Hi Boleyn. Is Demetrios Alexatos (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) different from when you previously nominated it for deletion? I think your nom still applies. — JJMC89 (T·C) 03:34, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
- You are invited to join the discussion at Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Demetrios Alexatos (2nd nomination). — JJMC89 (T·C) 15:57, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
