Paul Clark is a musician who was involved in the Jesus music movement and early contemporary Christian music industry. He was born in Kansas City and recorded his first album in 1971, Songs from the Saviour Vol 1. Its songs became one of the first signs of the growing "Jesus Movement" of the early 70s.
He went on to record a further albums including Songs From The Savior - Volume Two, Come Into His Presence and Good To Be Home with Paul Clark and Friends (including Phil Keaggy, Jay Truax, John Mehler, Bill speer, Mike Burhart, and more), then launched the well received, award winning 1977 album Hand to the Plow. In 1978 he followed up with Change in the Wind and in 1980 with Aim for the Heart. These three albums had some jazz influences and were well-produced in the context of other Christian music of the time. Aim for the Heart featured Abraham Laboriel on bass along with Harlan Rogers, Hadley Hockensmith and Bill Maxwell and was certainly jazz influenced. Those four went on to become members of Koinonia jazz band from 1982 till about 1990.
Clark is recognized as one of the founding fathers of the Jesus Movement and the contemporary Christian music industry. During his 13-year association with Word Records in the 1970s and 1980s, Clark's songwriting, record producing and performances placed him in the forefront along with artists like Phil Keaggy, 2nd Chapter of Acts, Love Song, Larry Norman, Andraé Crouch, Honeytree, Keith Green, Randy Stonehill, Barry McGuire, and many notable others.
In 2013, Clark unleashed a new collection of songs in the Americana genre called, "Down At The Whistle Stop." Clark tethers the fiery talents of longtime friends, Gospel Music Hall of Fame guitarist, Phil Keaggy, Phil Madeira (Emmy Lou Harris), Dennis Holt (Taylor Swift), Don Harris (Paul Baloche), Jimmie Herman (Carrie Underwood), Jay Pfeifer, Jimmie Bratcher, Stanton Kessler and Christie Kuzmich to the equally savvy skills of new friends, Matt Pierson (Big N Rich), Brandon Draper (Donna Summer), Charity Von, Tracy Frech, Cynthia Vaughn, Cameron Vaughn, Robert Roberson III and Phillip Babineaux, to power the songs down the line. Engineered, and mixed by Nashville veteran, Todd Robbins, (Little Big Town), and mastered by Grammy Award winning, Lurssen Mastering,(Taylor Swift, Civil Wars, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss), of Hollywood, California, the sonic quality of the project is second to none. Clark's songs continue to affirm that the beauty of the sojourn is not confined to the final destination. His deep convictions will take you on a journey far beyond a one blink station. Don't be lulled into thinking this is just "another record" from a CCM pioneer trying to live out the string. On the contrary, Clark's fires, musically and lyrically, as well as his supporting cast of veterans, are freshly stoked. All aboard!
In 2016, Clark raised the bar by recording his 20th solo album, "Branching Roots" and releasing it on 180 gram vinyl, as well as digital format. Burrowing into 11 new compositions with Clark, and his vast array of vintage string and percussion instruments, are the exquisite talents of multi-Award winning fiddler and mandolinist, Stuart Duncan; guitar legend and longtime recording friend, Phil Keaggy; veteran upright bass players, Byron House and Matt Pierson; old school pedal steel player, Tom Killen; rising Resophonic picker, Ian O'Bryant and gritty background vocalist, Charity Mozafari. Mixed by Todd Robbins, mastered by Reuben Cohen of Lurssen Mastering, and the vinyl lacquers mastered by the iconic Ron McMaster at Capitol Records, Branching Roots will likely cause a thirst for a water that can quench the driest of souls.
He is also a published fine art photographer and master carpenter with repurposed material, especially barnwood.
