Video game walkthroughs (sometimes referred to as a play-through) are videos in which a player records and uploads footage of themselves playing video games to video sharing sites such as YouTube and live stream play-throughs to media streaming sites such as Twitch.tv. These videos generally have the goal of assisting others in accomplishing feats within the video games. Video game walkthroughs may consist of a 'walkthrough' through the entire game, certain parts/sections, helping viewers improve their skills in the games, or they may be guides on finding rare collectables or unlocking achievements.
Players that watch video game walkthroughs tend to do so for entertainment purposes as well as for their typically informative nature. According to Business Insider and The Verge, viewers use this genre of videos and live streams to assist with everything from purchase decisions regarding a game to "get better at playing games" in addition to their entertainment value.
Primary Uses
According to 2016 study regarding the different motivations of viewers, the five most significant causes/factors are:
- to gain information and knowledge
- to have a pleasant experience
- to gain more confidence and credibility
- to connect with family and friends
- to have an escape or diversion from real life
Press
GameRadar+ has called the watching of video game play-throughs the "Netflix of video games" with CNN calling watching video games "must-see TV". According to the Associated Press,
They not only see the live and recorded video sessions as a way to sharpen their abilities, but also as a way to interact with star players in chatrooms or simply be entertained.
