PredecessorBMW 5 Series (E60)
SuccessorBMW 5 Series (G30)

The BMW F10 is the sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series, which debuted in November 2009 as the successor to the E60 5 Series. The body styles of the range are:

The F10 was the first 5 Series to be available in a hatchback body style. It was also the first 5 Series to offer a hybrid drivetrain and a dual-clutch transmission (in the M5).

The M5 version was powered by the S63 twin-turbo V8 engine with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. It was the first M5 to use a turbocharged engine.

Styling

2010 BMW 550i interior

The F10 uses a more traditional BMW exterior styling approach compared with the controversial styling of its E60 predecessor. The "Bangle butt" is removed, a Hofmeister kink is present,, a traditional kidney grill is used and crease lines are used on the bonnet (similar to the E39 and older 5 Series models). Reviews of the styling have ranged from slightly bland, to handsome and muscular. The newer F10 bodystyle takes a back to basics approach with the exterior and features many styling cues from older 5 series designs such as the E34.

The interior features an updated iDrive system and increased space for rear passengers. The F10 saw the return of the centre console being angled towards the driver, as used on the E39 and earlier generations of 5 Series. Back seat space is still tight for a car of this size but comfort for all passengers is high and interior quality/fit and finish is top notch.

Chassis and suspension

The F10 shares a platform with the BMW 7 Series (F01) and has been described as a downsized-7 Series in contrast to its E60 predecessor which was regarded as an upsized 3 Series. Improvements over the E60-generation 5-series include a front dual ball joint short-long arm suspension, and rear multilink suspension, making it more refined but heavier. While the E60 had an aluminum front chassis structure from firewall forward (which provided perfect balance but was expensive to repair), the F10 has returned to the conventional steel monocoque. The 2011 model has a rollover risk of 9.3%. While the F10 still handles quite well for a vehicle of its size, It is very heavy and tuned more to satisfy customers looking for comfort. handling is capable, but more ponderous and far less direct then BMW's of the past and lots of soft body roll at the limit.

Body styles

Sedan (F10)

The sedan was the first body style to be released. It was unveiled at the Munich Olympic Stadium in 2009.

Touring (F11)

The Touring model was unveiled at the 2010 Leipzig Auto Show.

BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo

In May 2009, BMW released the official pictures of its production model 5-Series Gran Turismo, which is considered a coupé-like crossover vehicle or station wagon - a blend of different typical body styles. BMW advertises the new 5-Series GT as "The First of its Kind". The 5-Series GT is powered by a single-turbo diesel straight-6 producing 245 PS (180 kW; 242 hp), by a single-turbo straight-6 producing 306 PS (225 kW; 302 hp) and a twin-turbo V8 producing 408 PS (300 kW; 402 hp); the latter will give the car a 0-60 mph time of 5.5 seconds. The car receives ZF's new 8-speed serial automatic transmission, along with a new Brake Energy Regeneration system.

BMW has suggested that the new 5-Series GT would replace the 5-Series Touring (wagon) in their North American lineup, due to slow sales of the E61 Touring in the United States, with only 400 sold in 2009. In that country, more M5s and Z8s have been sold than the 535i and 540i wagons, respectively. BMW is targeting annual sales of 4000 to 8000 5 Series GTs.

The F07 Gran Turismo shares the same F01 7 Series-derived platform, powertrain, mechanical package, and dashboard with the F10. However the F07's fascia has different headlights and bumper, with a larger split-kidney grille similar to that of the F01 7 Series. The F07 also has a taller height resulting in a higher center of gravity, its longer length allows for more rear legroom, the rear passenger accommodation has optional "Executive" bucket seats for two instead of the three-seat bench, and it weighs 400 pounds (180 kg) more than the F10. The F07 also features frame-less doors and a double-pane liftgate trunk.

The F07 was released before the rest of the next-generation 5-Series lineup. In Canada and the United States, for first half of 2010, the Gran Turismo was sold alongside the outgoing E60 5-Series, until the rollout of the F10 in June 2010.

Long wheelbase sedan (F18)

BMW 520Li (China)

A long wheel base version of the BMW 5 Series Sedan was developed for the Chinese and Mexican markets, as a cheaper alternative to the BMW 7 Series which is also longer and wider. The 5 Series LWB has been extended by 14 cm (5.5 in).

The model range includes the 520Li, 523Li, 528Li, and 535Li. All models include 8-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic.

The LWB 5 Series was first assembled at BMW Plant Shenyang in Shenyang, China plant for the Chinese market.

The Mexican built armored LWB 5 series is currently sold internationally as the BMW 5 Security and is manufactured in Toluca, State of Mexico, Mexico. Mexican built armored BMW 5 vehicles are also built on an identical stretched frame as the Chinese long wheelbase model but are otherwise identical to the international models and do include most of the specialized features of the Chinese version apart from the entertainment system and power sunblinds. Instead the added space is used for the installation of armor plate and other security features. It is only is available with the 4.4L V8 gasoline engine.

BMW is planning on selling the Chinese built long wheelbase version in the Middle East market by 2013 and eventually assembling the LWB 5 series in their Egyptian facility for the Middle Eastern market.

PredecessorE60 M5
BMW M5 sedan (Canada)

The F10 M5 was previewed by the BMW Concept M5, which was unveiled at Auto Shanghai in April 2011. The production M5 was unveiled in 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

It's powered by BMW's S63tu biturbo 4.4 litre V8, an upgraded version of the unit found in the E70 X5 M and E71 X6 M. The compression ratio was raised and the pistons strengthened to cope with the added boost and compression. Equipped with higher lift camshafts and individual throttle bodies for added response, the engine has higher boost at 22 psi (1.5 bar) compared to the S63 unit found in the X5/X6M. Increasingly stringent international CO2 emissions and fuel consumption regulations are cited as the cause of death of the outgoing model's V10 engine, with the new S63tu engine cutting CO2 emissions by 25%. The engine produces 560 hp (418 kW) and 680 N⋅m (500 lb⋅ft) of torque. The engine redlines at 7,200 rpm. Acceleration to 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) is in 4.4 seconds, and top speed is limited to 250 kilometres per hour (160 mph). This could be increased to 305 kilometres per hour (190 mph) if the M Driver's Package was selected.

The Getrag SMG III single-clutch 7-speed semi-automatic transmission of the E60 M5 was replaced by a seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic. This is paired with an Active M-Differential with torque vectoring between the rear wheels. In North America, the F10M was available with a 6-speed manual transmission, the only market to be offered this option.

Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres are specified, on standard 19-inch multi-spoke or optional 20-inch split 5-spoke wheels.

The M5 also used an "Active Sound" system that plays a modified engine sound through the car's audio system.

Alpina models

Alpina produced two variants of the F10/F11 5 Series, the B5 and D5. Both models received standard Alpina enhancements over the base BMW, including improvements to the engine, transmission, suspension and braking systems.

B5 Bi-Turbo

The B5 is based on the 550i. All iterations were fitted with Alpina-modified versions of BMW's N63 twin-turbo V8 engine. The original B5, which was unveiled at the 2010 Goodwoood Festival of Speed, produced 373 kW (500 hp) and 700 N⋅m (520 lb⋅ft). Alpina unveiled an updated B5 at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. Power had been uprated to 397 kW (532 hp) and torque to 730 N⋅m (540 lb⋅ft). During 2015, Alpina sold the B5 Bi-Turbo Edition 50, which marked the company's 50th year in operation. This special edition featured a further enhanced engine which produced 441 kW (591 hp) and 800 N⋅m (590 lb⋅ft). The standard B5 received this same engine for the B5's last year of production, 2016.

D5 Bi-Turbo

The D5 Bi-Turbo is based on the 535d. It received an Alpina-tuned version of BMW's N57 powerplant. It produced 257 kW (345 hp) and 700 N⋅m (520 lb⋅ft).

Special models

530 Le

BMW 530 Le

A prototype plug-in hybrid based on the long wheelbase version of the BMW 5 Series Sedan, produced in co-operation with Tongji University in Shanghai. It included 160 kW combustion engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, an electrical motor with a maximum output of 70 kW. Electric-only mode is active up to 60 km/h (37 mph) with range of 75 km (47 mi). The vehicle was unveiled in Auto Shanghai 2011.

The series production version went on sale in China in 2015, with an all-electric range of 58 km. Combined fuel consumption is around 2 liters/100 km.

ActiveHybrid 5 (2011-)

2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 (USA)

The ActiveHybrid is a hybrid version of the 5 Series based on the 535i Sedan. It was previewed by the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The production ActiveHybrid 5 features a synchronous electric motor integrated into the housing of the automatic gearbox, saving space. The electric drive system develops 40 kW (54 hp) and 210 N⋅m (150 lb⋅ft) of torque available from rest. The motor is supplied with energy by a lithium-ion high-performance battery, likewise specially developed for the BMW ActiveHybrid 5. The high-voltage battery has its own cooling system and offers usable energy capacity of 675 Wh. The integration of the lithium-ion high-performance battery into the luggage area reduces the load capacity of the ActiveHybrid 5 to 375 litres, 145 litres lower than that of a standard 5 Series Sedan. Electric-only mode is active up to 60 km/h (37 mph). It also features "Hybrid Auto Start-Stop" function, coasting mode, and standard Driving Dynamics Control switch with ECO PRO mode, all designed to improve efficiency. BMW claims the ActiveHybrid 5 is capable of an electric-only range of 4 km (2.5 mi).

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rated the 2013 model year ActiveHybrid 5 with a combined fuel economy of 26 mpg‑US (9.0 L/100 km; 31 mpg‑imp), with 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) in the city, and 30 mpg‑US (7.8 L/100 km; 36 mpg‑imp) in highway.

BMW 5 Series emergency vehicles (2011-)

BMW 5 Series Touring Paramedic Vehicle, and BMW 5 Series Touring Covert Vehicle, were unveiled in 11th RETTmobil 2011.

M550d xDrive (2012-)

BMW M550d xDrive

The M550d xDrive is a special high-performance variant of the F10/11 5 Series. Along with the X5 and X6 M50d, it launched the M Performance sub-brand. All three models were first unveiled at the 2012 Geneva International Motor Show The M550d is powered by BMW's N57S engine, a tri-turbocharged inline-6 diesel. This unit produces a maximum of 280 kW (380 hp) and 740 N⋅m (550 lb⋅ft), enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7s (Touring model: 4.9s). Available in both the sedan and Touring bodystyles, it is fitted exclusively with the ZF 8HP sport automatic transmission.

Modifications were made to the suspension and damping, steering, brake system, suspension control systems and all-wheel drive to enhance the driving experience. Visual cues unique to M550d models include trapezoidal exhausts in dark chrome and both wing mirrors and air-intake bars in "ferric grey". Other 5 series models have wing mirrors in the same colour as the rest of the vehicle. The front fog lamps, standard on all other F10/F11 5 Series models are removed, to make space for additional air-intakes. The door-sill plates bear an "M550d" inscription.

For the market launch of the BMW M5 in 2012, several launch clips were released, including a 2-minute short film titled as "Bullet" by BMW Canada and a commercial featuring Urs Inauen and Gavin Patterson driving a M5 in Circuit de l'Anneau Du Rhin. A movie featuring a M5 prototype driving in snow was also produced.
