If you want more operas to be written by women and widely performed, then by all means work towards that goal. I'd like to see that too. :You ask why "Gender bias is "objective"?". Excuse me, but I didn't think that I had to explain the difference between girls and boys. I think that is a pretty objectively defined difference, unless you factor in "transgendered" people.
:It's not what "I" expected to see or who should be on this list; Quite frankly, I really don't care. However, there are enough women who have written opera (especially in the past thirty years) that SOME should be on this list. The sources which could have proved that have been suppressed or dismissed. If they were examined, or if lists that include only men were discarded (aha, I'll bet that you didn't think of that...why are lists of only men neutral and lists of only women POV?), then at least one woman (in the case of these lists, that would be Judith Weir, but it doesn't necessarily HAVE to be her). The point is that the selection process of the lists had the POV agenda of confirming the standard repertoire, and that's basically what it did.
::Before you ask "why didn't you express this in the discussion?". The answer is that since I was defined as having a POV bias to living composers and women, I was asked not to participate. I have counted less then ten people who made this list, two of whom were possibly women, the others who were almost certainly men. Regardless of what happens here, my contributions are neither wanted nor will they be accepted, given the "Great Purge" currently underway. So, there you have it.
:::The "Venus de Milo" syndrome came from a discussion with someone completely unrelated here, who teaches women's studies at an American University and who saw this as a textbook example. I'm not an expert at this, she is. I don't know anyone's gender in this discussion with certainty, so whatever it means to anyone personally becomes a question of their own self-exploration. If this is making people uncomfortable, then perhaps they need to think about this.
Would you mind replying (if you care to reply) on my discussion page? I only saw this by chance. Thank you. ] 22:23, 25 September 2006 (UTC) |

Blocking
I disagree with your block of me last night. I will admit I was out of line when I vandalized Redvars page, and left him a nasty note. However I felt abused by him, and unfortunately responded in a negative fashion unstead of appropriately. Although I apologize for my actions and admit my wrong, I will note at the time I was being harassed by other individuals who abused their power in an attempt to torment me. 74.136.222.198 06:42, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- You redirected the featured article on the Main Page to autofellatio, were blocked for three hours, and then you launched a series of vicious personal attacks on everyone who defended Misplaced Pages against your malicious actions, including a bizarre "justification" for the autofellatio redirect, and you were blocked again. Now you are claiming that others abused you? What?? Antandrus (talk) 14:59, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- That characterization is not accurate in the least and you know it. It seems you are indeed fond of abuse. Yes, I redirected the featured article as a joke. I indeed deserved a warning, not a block. I was enraged by the characterization provided by Redvars, and in anger responded to harshly. Aeon1006 decided at that point to warn me, I attempted to dispute his claims and he embarked on a campaign of harassment, removing all of my comments. I did not, as you so inaccurately put it, launch a series of vicious personal attacks on everyone who defended Misplaced Pages from my "malicious actions". My actions against Redvars were sadly, malicious, but the same is not true towards anyone else. 74.136.222.198 15:54, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- I completely disagree. There was nothing wrong with my block. You do NOT get a "free pass" to vandalise once (i.e. the "warning" you think was an entitlement of yours), and you do not get a "free pass" to leave nasty comments just because you didn't like the consequences to your earlier action. - It's not obvious to me. I've never heard of it, though it gets a lot of Google hits. Somewhere within the GIS section, certainly: maybe one of the GIS articles needs a section on active projects to assemble experts and data within specific sub-disciplines. Can you help with an image?
Hi Antandrus,
I'm stuck trying to transport a nice image of a spinet from the French Misplaced Pages to the English one. It looks like it's legit, but I can't summon up a proper license for it. Could you take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/Image:Epinette_Rouaud.jpeg and let me know if there's any way to address the conundrum described there?
Thanks very much, Opus33 18:21, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- Yikes. I'm looking, but it's not obvious to me, yet. Thanks for finding the image though! I'll look some more later. Antandrus (talk) 18:32, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

- Thanks, Antandrus, we'll hope that works! Best wishes, Opus33 23:00, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

that kid
I thought it probably was him, but I was assuming good faith, for no particular reason. I'm really tempted to put that "This article is crap" template on the List of clichés in music page, but I won't. I've already gotten on enough peoples' nerves there. I was accused of holding the article hostage :P I'm afraid that if I tried to make it better, as one editor suggests, I would be accused of WP:POINT. I do keep thinking of an excellent sourced one, though: "By the end of the decade the concerto di donne was a courtly cliché in northern Italy." (Newcomb, 99) I'm encorporating a bunch of stuff from Newcomb into that article now, and when I'm done I think I'll have a Peer review, so look forward to some talk page spam :-) Cheers, Mak (talk) 02:59, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- ROFL, that is a temptation, no? Heh. --Hey, imagine what Misplaced Pages would be like if it were edited by Italians around 1580. - Victory is mine now and forever, you people can not even listen to least reason and especially when I was right many times. The only thing Heros was right is that i am not squid, i may be g reeves dude, but i was accused of bs i had nothing to do with... So many mistakes I found on wiki, you have no idea, some I reverted, some corrected, most I will not touch, besides all post graduate programs are informed and do not use wiki as reliable source...
I have bachelor's in history and music was my minor, I know a lot on and about your kind of music, including composition, I could have done a lot for you and even contributed to music, but alas, you all made up your mind against me long time and ah well, I am wasting my time again on loosers, but you, mak, curps and few others lost! And go back to school of ethics, the ethics you have are the ones you made up in your bird-brains. And so much for your philosophy.... What you mean nice day, you accused me of vandalizing pages I've never heard of before, shame on you all, great detectives you are, many times I had terrible belly laugh from the garbage you wrote about me or the great "investigation" you did into me, lol, all, mostly, wrong. And the way you block people is totally unjustified, there are classic examples all over, like below. George Reeves Lives —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.107.0.130 (talk • contribs) .

Dear Antandrus, thank you so much for your beautiful words, your kidness and your trust in me. My Request for Adminship is finally over, and the support and appreciation that the community has gifted me will stick in my mind as long as I live. I have no way to properly express how grateful I am to you for all you've done for me, and all I can tell you is, I'll try not to disappoint you nor anyone else with my use of the buttons... and if I mess up, make sure to come here and give me a good yell! :) Seriously, tho, if you ever need my help, either for admin-related stuff or in any other way, you'll always be welcome to message me, and I promise I'll try my very best.
Dear Antandrus, this is the perfect opportunity to finally speak to one another after reading your words for months and months. I am sure that we'll be able to talk often, and trust me, it'd be my pleasure. Both your contributions and, most important your warm way to deal with others made me notice you long, long ago; and being supported by a person I look up to, like you, meant the world to me. I sincerely hope this is but the beginning of a friendship, and such thought fills me with joy. Please, take good care, and visit me any time you wish! :) With a big hug, your friend,

Request your attention to the GoldToeMarionette case
GoldToeMarionette (talk · contribs) had a WP:RFCU inappropriately completed on their account by Jayjg (talk · contribs) and Hall Monitor (talk · contribs) blocked the account after it was identified as a multiple account despite their being no violation of Misplaced Pages policy by GoldToeMarionette. These users did not respond to requests to undo the action.
Other steps in dispute resolution have been tried
- Hall Monitor was emailed with no reply
- GoldToeMarionette posted on the account's User and Talk Pages seeking assistance when the talk page was protected without the issue being discussed. User:GoldToeMarionette User_talk:GoldToeMarionette
GoldToeMarionette notified article contributors that illustrative examples were subject to an AfD. The account strictly followed the WP:SPAM#Internal_spamming guideline. The AfD was without controversy. GoldToeMarionette did not participate in the vote. HereToCleanup removed the posts following the AfD in accord with the widely accepted Misplaced Pages Guideline Misplaced Pages:Spam#Internal_spamming that states "Clean up your mess. For example, after engaging in cross-posting to promote some election, be sure to remove those cross-posts after the election is complete."
- GoldToeMarionette Contributions
- Breakdown of GoldToeMarionette's Posts
- Example post to 66 article contributors
- Example post removal from 66 article contributors
- HereToCleanup's Contributions
- No AfD participation
Since GoldToeMarionette was strictly following Misplaced Pages Policy, there should not have been a Check User completed by Jayjg. Hall Monitor only blocked the account because it was labeled as a sockpuppet by Jayjg's completed Check User. Absent policy violation it should not have been processed in RFCU or been blocked. I am asking for your help to confirm that policy was not violated, administrative action should not have been taken, and request that the administrative action be reversed by unblocking GoldToeMarionette and unprotecting the talk page. Thank you for your time with this request. SixWallRoom 04:04, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Hello!
I enjoyed your article on the composer John Bull. In your article, you mention that there's evidence that he was involved in espionage missions for Queen Elizabeth. I'm actually doing a Musicology paper pertaining to this subject; I was wondering which of your sources you got that particular piece of information from, so that I could look it up and use it. Thanks a lot, and I'll look forward to your response.

- Hi Jeff: sorry, I'm finally getting to my talk page backlog. I did not add that bit about Bull being involved in espionage; it was added by user User:Yellow Lion on 5 September 2005 . I have never read anything about this, and do not have a source to back it up (there's nothing in Grove that I recall). Antandrus (talk) 15:41, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Advice
Hello Antandrus,
I'm wondering if I can seek your advice. I've recently been involved in a dispute with User:Robin klein that has greatly exacerbated my wikistress. I'm wondering if you would be so kind as to assist me in two ways: firstly, as an experienced editor and music scholar, to offer a third opinion, and secondly, to advise me as to how I might have handled or should continue to handle the situation in the most productive and cooperative fashion possible.
The dispute began on the music page. I copyedited the lead to try to make it clearer and more understandable and my edits were reverted without comment. I then began a discussion on the article's talk page. To my chagrin, this apparent feud continued on the issue of Voice instrumental music. I found this article a while back, couldn't understand what it was about, and tried to copyedit it for a while. User:Hyacinth changed it to a redirect to vocal music, calling it OR, and moved the rest of the contents to Vocal music, after which I copyedited more, removing a lot of what did not seem appropriate for a survey of vocal music. I now think the article was OR as I cannot find any use of the term "voice instrumental music", other than mirror sites of wikipedia. Robin, as the initial author, feels differently. Her comments are on on my talk page and my comments on her talk page.
I don't wish to burden you - I'm just not sure what's best to do in this situation and I hoped you might be able to help. Thank you. Best, MarkBuckles (talk) 09:11, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for getting back to me! I didn't realize you were on Wikibreak when I first posted this. I hope the conference went/is going well! The situation has become amicable most thankfully, but has not been resolved. There are two unrelated issues. First, the lead of the Music article. Some discussion regarding this at Talk:Music. Second, the future of Voice instrumental music or its former content. Copious discussion of this at both our talk pages. I would be most grateful to get a third educated and experienced opinion, whether or not you agree with my views. Your general advice on the interaction is also quite welcome. I think I'm learning from this experience and I'm hoping to improve my general method of Wikitalk. Since text-based communication tends to be dehumanizing in a way, and because people are inherently protective of their creations (even though this is a Wiki), I've found assuming good faith to be extremely important at all times - and not just that you assume it, but that you actively demonstrate it in the tone and content of your messages, since that's all we have to go by. Um, I think there has been a slight misunderstanding. I was informed that I was blocked because someone happened to be using the same internet service as me. To my knowledge, blocks were meant to block people who did something wrong. Could you please unblock me so that I may continue contributing to Misplaced Pages? - Sure. First of all, if you are able to edit my talk page, you can't be blocked. Second, since there's nothing in the block log for you specifically, you must have been hit by an autoblock, i.e. by someone who shared an IP with you. I just cleared the only three autoblocks for which I was the blocking admin in the last 24 hours. Without the actual message on your block page that's about as far as I can go; hope it helps. Concerto etc.
Apologies if I'm becoming tiresome, I just thought that I'd let you know that I've shoved the concerto delle donne article on to FAC, largely because I'm going to have to give the Newcomb book back soon, and I want to have it for the majority of the FAC, just in case. Composer catagorization issues...
Hello. I'm afraid I'm having a bit of a tango with Dafoeberezin3494 concerning several major changes that he or she been undertaking in the "classical composers" catagory. I posted something about this on August 12th at ], but haven't had any response. At my suggestion, he or she has posted something to the composers project page at ] but this seems to be escalating rather than deflating.
- My main problem is that he or she is using very questionable sources (a textbook generally used in non-music major Music appreciation classes at American Universities, "standard repertoire" lists and the like....) and has a tendency to use lots of non-POV language such as "the greatest", "the best" , "the most important". This wouldn't really be a problem except that he or she works very quickly and this is starting to change the whole structure of the catagorization of composers. I can personally can foresee several problems with this.
- This person should obviously be encouraged as a young person with lots of energy, but quite frankly, I'm not the person to do so as we're not getting on at all. I'm wondering if you would mind perhaps communicating a bit about this and perhaps giving some insight. I think that if I say anything else, that this person is probably going to explode. And really, at this point, I would quite understand. It's just not a "fair fight". If you can't help with this, I would appreciate your passing this on to someone who can. Thanks in advance. Okay, this is the second time I have been blocked today based on my IP address...Can you please unblock my user name? I didn't do anything wrong. I was editing my user page when I saw I was blocked for something relating to Fidel Castro...I haven't edited that article...ever.
Sorry to bother you again...
Its Dwslassls...
Okay, well I may not be blocked from editing a talk page, but submitting the information is quite a problem...That is what I meant...
I can type all I want into an article...not a talk page, but whenever I try to submit the edits, it just says "your IP is blocked for...Fidel castro"...Then I try again, and everything i've typed is completely gone and I can't do anything. I spent about half an hour typing the articles I've edited on my user page, and I couldn't submit it, and all the work went down the drain. AOL IP 207.200.116.*** vandalism
Hi, Saw you reverted an edit from the AOL address a minute ago. Looks like there is a vandal bot on the go from that address, look at my contribs from the last 30 mins or so, reverted loads. WP:AIV doesn't deal with range blocks, how can I get a range block put in place for 15 mins or so? This is similar to one I was involved in a couple of months back but I've forgotten how it was done. Cheers Khukri 22:15, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not an admin so can't block, but I'm with you I'm not up for blocking for a longtime, just 15mins usually calms it down. Stopped using VP for this as it's not quick enough, back on popups. Cheers Khukri 22:18, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

American classical music
You appear to be the originator of the section on the New England School. I find this sentence curious:
- Their intellectual and stylistic descendants, such as Howard Hanson, Walter Piston, and Roger Sessions, and have remained through the 20th and into the 21st centuries in the major universities in the cities of the northeast and elsewhere.
"Their descendants" what? Eliding the examples of Hanson, etcet, gives "Their intellectual and stylistic descendants ... and have remained" which is gibberish. Could you supply the missing copy? For me? Please? :-) Signinstranger 19:20, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Despite the names negative connotation, the V|rus truely means no harm. Its simply a fun community builder in which many users spread the word of the |nfection. As that troll on my talk page kindly pointed out to me, I'm not fluent in languages other than English, so I'd rather not try to go to school in another language. It is getting amusing, latest Ray Lopez meat puppet is now accusing me of being Ray, and flinging personal attacks. The individual in question is also harrassing me at my home phone number. The "M" organization
Hi: Thanks for your response the other day. The IT sexctor has provided a living of sorts but it has been neither terribly remunerative nor (increasingly) fun. But as you say it's definitely better than the usual track for us terminal degree holders. I keep my hand in as best I can, both here and at home (where I sing in the choir at church and conduct there when needed--nice to be married to the organist, and fool increasingly with composing and arranging, which I can do more or less independently of other people).
Tell me about your involvement with M. I have been completely uninvolved so far (joined in early 2004), largely because their events and my schedule have not aligned until recently. I am hoping to get to an introductory event sometime soon. The events also often seem to involve buying meals and sometimes lodging, and our finances have not been such that I feel I can do that, though I was told that I could always attend an event but not buy anything. What's your take on the whole thing? Thanks! --Wspencer11 (talk to me...) 15:32, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
And a small addendum
From Whitman's A Passage to India, lines that I love (both on their own and the way RVW sets them in A Sea Symphony) and that could sum up one's approach to Misplaced Pages:
Sail forth! steer for the deep waters only!
Reckless, O soul, exploring, I with thee, and thou with me;
For we are bound where mariner has not yet dared to go,
And we will risk the ship, ourselves and all.
O my brave soul!
O farther, farther sail!
O daring joy, but safe! Are they not all the seas of God?
O farther, farther, farther sail!

- I have never heard the Hindemith setting but would love to sometime, though my experience of his music written after the early 40s or so is that it's clearly Hindemith but not generally very interesting--he just seems to go through the motions. (One buddy of mine from Aspen days decades ago always described Hindemith's music as "Looks like Bach, sounds like hell.") I believe I read somewhere once that someone (apparently with muchos cojones) asked him once why he wrote so much music when only 20% of it was worthwhile. He responded by saying that without the 80% there would not have been the 20%. (What a great reply!) So the Requiem is high-quality? --Wspencer11 (talk to me...) 15:50, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Could you semi-protect those pages again? He's still at it. What a strange vandal! Stephen Aquila 17:31, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks. Well, all I've seen him do is redirect the home pages of newspaper services to their Yahoo! feed, and he likes to mention on the talk pages of news channels (MSNBC, Fox, etc.) that he's found a live stream of them at a certain IP address. I really have no idea why he's doing it, either. I mean, some of his earlier sock puppets didn't shy from the standard "replace the page with a curse word" vandalism on other pages, but that's all I've seen him do on newspaper and news channel pages. Vandal/concerto
Yeah, I noticed that that was the vandal's modus operandi. When we were fixing them the other night I tended to delete all his image reversions, so it wouldn't look like he was doing the vandalism reverting, and so that I wouldn't have to check all the images. Most of my Concerto stuff used Newcomb as their main source, so if you find stuff that doesn't, I'd be happy to hear about it and see if I can get it from NY Public. I didn't find much in Einstein, but I might not have looked in the right places. Even though Concerto is an FA now (woo!) I think it still needs some clarity in terms of the musical style, and better structure. But I'm feeling a little worn out on those aspects of it at the moment :) Oh well, maybe I'll write some articles on Lully operas. ...dinner party now, perhaps I'll see you in the recent changes later :P Cheers, Mak (talk) 22:32, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Stirling Newberry
There is something I have wondered. First note I am the NCV, but I have given p vandalism. This is unrelated to my vandalism.
Anyway, what I have wondered is whether Stirling is the same as the users harassing him? Maybe he'd actually just a troll. I'd like to request a checkuser on the matter. The things which make me think this are
1:User:Ray Lopez made an edit to his talk page around the time that Stirling came back from his wikibreak.
2:The harassers can't be watching him 24/7, but both Stirling and the harassers seem to be editing at around the same time. Maybe he's just switching his accounts from one to another and trying to fake a harssment going on between users.
Although this may not be true, I would like to see a checkuser to find out whether these are the same person. This includes Ray Lopez, T Turner, and the others. Shminh 16:24, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
- Actually they have been checkusered; look in the block log. There's a long history of abuse coming from the person behind the "Ray Lopez" account, but beyond about a year ago I can't tell who is who. I've known Stirling for a couple of years, and I don't see any reason why he would make sockpuppets to attack himself; I know that was a charge Ray made, but it just doesn't make any sense.
You know, security companies often hire former hackers to help them. If you are really a reformed vandal and have stopped, you can help us. I always had a hunch you were a smart kid who might join the good side some day. While I might be wrong, I won't stop you if you want to help. Cheers,Antandrus (talk) 17:24, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Sonata problems
Hi Antandrus. It's been a long time since we've caught up with each other. I see you're still a keen editor of music articles. I'm now approaching you in that capacity, and in your role as an admin. There have been continuing difficulties at Sonata form and History of sonata form, along with other articles addressing sonata (of which there are far too many, but that's another matter). I would be very grateful if you would review the situation, looking at those two articles and also at their talk pages. A useful conspectus of some of the issues is to be found at User_talk:Rainwarrior#Sonata. As you know, I am a serious editor in these areas, and I have been patient (well, I also call a spade a spade in edit summaries). But I now need some advice from you about the best way forward. If things can't be put on a better footing, I fear that the suite of articles on musical form, in which Misplaced Pages has a genuine opportunity to excel, will be jeopardised. Thanks! – Noetica 01:53, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your prompt reply to this at my talk page, Antandrus. Yes, Stirling and I do overreact to each other. For that reason I do not get into direct discussion with him: from my point of view, we are so different that it would be futile to attempt to engage him in dispassionate dialogue aimed at improving articles. I used to try; it didn't work. As I say, I can only claim this as my point of view! My style is to be meticulous in editing, and to declare my hand in edit summaries. If that can't work to make certain articles better, I'll probably stay away from those articles. (We must make what we can of the possible, as an ancient friend of ours reminds us!) Thanks, once more. We'll see what others have to say, and do. – Noetica 02:28, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Glass
Yeah, the problem was that there were actually two edits close together by different people. Perhaps I should have left the infobox, but frankly I kind of hate them, so if the people adding them can't do it right, I'm not going to bother to fix it. That other guy has inserted the "banal" comment a couple of times, so I've left another comment on his talk page about NPOV and WP:V. Hopefully it will help, but more likely I'll get a long rant about how his music is banal, and how dare I deny people the truth. Oh well. Cheers, Mak (talk) 20:37, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
- (hums an ascending first-inversion triad many times) -- yes indeed. (I vaguely remember writing the Uncyclopedia entry on Glass, but I was probably drunk at the time.) Antandrus (talk) 20:39, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
- Well, I make no comment on my true feelings about Glass' music. I just think accusing an artist of banality is just about the harshest thing you can do, and if you're going to do it you really have to do it right. If the guy got some good sources, a supporting paragraph, a couple other major composers/critics/conductors calling him banal, that'd be fine. ps I do really like a lot of minimalist music. Just not Glass. I think he's banal. Mak (talk) 20:42, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
- LOL, just read your piece on Uncyclopedia. Brilliant. I think it was better as you originally wrote it than how it's ended up, except that I like that the "throw this CD across the room thing" has been templatized. Mak (talk) 20:55, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

A way I will surely stop vandalizng
First, I admit to creation of attack accounts on September 9, 2006. however This is not vadnalism. It is not exactly at least. It can be considered "trolling" or "disruption", but this is not "vandalism".
I will promise to neither vandalize articles nor create attack accounts again, although this will not always hold true. Do not revert hhis edit, as it is meant in good faith.
Anyway, a way in which I will surely stop vandalizing is if you restore an edit to Haathi Mere Saathi back in to the hsitroy. It was made on April 9, 2006, and includes some important content I have needed for months. i will surely stop my vandalism if you restore that to the history. Although i9twas vandalism, it was made back in April and the edits since then will overwrite it.Woivazhoinzuz 00:31, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

The Kindness Campaign
Hi there: I have stumbled across this and it sounds nice but I have no idea how to sign up. You signed up, so how do I? Just by adding the template to my userpage? That would be too simple, I would think... --Wspencer11 (talk to me...) 13:14, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! (I'm wearing them again today, in fact; they're a favorite pair.) The story went better than I was afraid it might... overall not too bad, except for that "9 other languages" bit! Mindspillage (spill yours?) 14:07, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
Intellect
Hello, Antandrus. This amusing edit reminded me of a story that I heard Denis Norden tell once: Bertrand Russell went out with some friends in the States, and they picnicked in their car in a no-parking zone. A policeman came up, pointed to the "no parking" sign, looked at Russell and said, "Can't you read?" Best wishes, RobertG ♬ talk 08:24, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, that Denis Norden (the late Frank Muir was the other one). I used to love both My Word! and My Music. Would they were still on. --RobertG ♬ talk 16:40, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
Satanism
Thank you for your efforts to protect the page for Satanism. Unfortunately, users are still vandalizing or inappropriately editing the page with unsourced comments in the lead, and are failing to enter into the discussion page to work out proposed edits or locate verifiable sources for information. What action can be taken to prevent this in the future? -Lvthn13 23:23, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
I have entered into discussions with lvthn13 deletes your posting. You ask for reverence about Satanism http://www.religioustolerance.org/satanis5.htm If you want more I can provide more links. Satanism was not founded by Anton LaVey. You should ask for reverences about ths. Anton LaVey started Church Of Satan not Satanism as the article claims
But if you disagree with this a lot of people get unset.

The following user has attempted to include links to websites distributing illegal pirate copies of books: http://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Special:Contributions&target=59.184.34.185
I am unsure what to do about this, can you advise? -Lvthn13 19:56, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not aware of any specific policy prohibiting links to sites that advocate illegal activity; but you'd certainly be within your rights to take the link away and make the case for doing so on the talk page, for it seems like common sense to me. WP:EL has our policies on external links. Antandrus (talk) 22:09, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Re Nicolas Gombert article
Hi, I'm quite new to editing articles on here, which is why I removed the 1980 Grove reference from the article on Nicolas Gombert which you then restored. Obviously if it's your source that's fair enough, but I wouldn't recommend that article in general as it has quite a lot of errors. Is there a way of separating sources for the article from further reading?
Cheers,
Sterencio
Thanks Antandrus

Music question
So, I'm working on Ruggiero (as in the melodic/harmonic formula), and I noticed we don't have an article for Reciting formula, so I went to see if Grove did, which they don't. Is there another word for it that I'm not thinking of? It seems like a fairly important cross-cultural musical/poetic/oral tradition-y concept. Mak (talk) 13:59, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hm, yes, I've noticed that Grove often does not have articles on narrowly named or defined topics. Usually they are covered under something larger. I'd look it up in my Harvard Dictionary of Music to see if has other names (but I'm at work right now) ... try googling. I can't think of another immediately obvious name. Does that phrase occur in Grove at all? Antandrus (talk) 15:15, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
- It seems that "recitation formula" is a little more common, but seems to refer only to Western chant tradition things. I'm thinking of a larger class of musical formulas, all of which are basically to assist in memorizing and chanting/reciting back stories/poems/epics in a variety of oral traditions. Is there a more global word for that sort of thing? Mak (talk) 17:32, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
Do you have any interest in IRC at this time? If you're busy I understand. Mak (talk) 01:04, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
Re: Fire
Turns out I was wrong about fire not being a plasma. If the anon adds it again, don't revert, but put a {{fact}} tag on it if he doesn't cite a source. --Coredesat talk! 04:59, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. In that case, that would be worthy of mention in maybe a sentence or two in the article, but it does not justify transforming the entire first paragraph. Basically, until recently, most classes I had taken had taught that fire is not a plasma or a state of matter, but is simply heat and light energy produced by a combustion reaction. --Coredesat talk! 17:34, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
Billyjoebob
User:Billyjoebob has created about 5 articles that were completely empty or nonsense. He has been warned several times. Mkdw 15:52, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- I can block him if he vandalises past his last warning; however so far I've just seen him create some low-quality substubs. I need to see malice rather than just cluelessness; I'm pretty careful on the block button. You can report him to WP:AIV though for another opinion. Antandrus (talk) 16:05, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
whitelist request
hello; i understand that i should contact an en.wiki admin about this, and i have discovered no better means than just picking you out of the admin list, so please bear with me; i was editing an article just now, to include a link to the radio page of my website, but my edit was blocked, due to a blacklisted link; therefore, please would you add my sweet little site -- mashoo.ma.funpic.org -- to the en.wiki whitelist? best wishes Mashoo (talk) 16:46, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- You can put your request up yourself here MediaWiki_talk:Spam-whitelist. Review our external links policy first and make sure that your site fits the criteria. I won't add it myself since I don't know what the reasons for blacklisting were. Nice pics, by the way; you're a good photographer. Antandrus (talk) 19:14, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- thank you; and thank you for your assistance; perhaps i'll be able to make some musical contributions like yours, one of these days; cheero Mashoo (talk) 21:50, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

In answer to your question on Mak's talkpage
"are you really arguing at this length, and spending this much time on this talk page, out of the best interests in improving our encyclopedia? ". :Yes, I am . This issue is being discussed by the International Alliance of women in Music. The Vice-President of the International Music council (UNESCO) has been informed. This is being followed closely by any number of scholars and is going to be discussed at any number of Universities this Fall. Gender bias is only one aspect of exclusionist thinking in the Academic establishment which supports the so-called "Standard Repertoire" canon. Gender bias is the easiest to spot and to confront, as it is objective. So, this is the most effective way to discuss what is really a much more complex issue.
- I am not saying that Mak is consciously expressing his/her gender bias, but scholars discussing this have pointed out that his/her reactions (especially the reference to the "Don't be a dick" article) would probably indicate that the person making these statements was most likely a woman interacting with a male-dominated hierarchy and trying to become "one of the guys" as means consolidating this power. This is often refered to as "Venus de Milo" syndrome because although the woman becomes a valued part of the male hierarchy, she is "cutting off her arms" in the longterm by supporting the gender bias of status quo. If you've seen the demographics of Misplaced Pages, there's no arguing about the male domination part. The point is, the resistent to change and the acceptance of suppressing this type of material would almost certainly by a symtome of deep-seated gender bias by a woman. But, I do not expect or want confirmation of the validity of this theory.
- Thank you for worrying about spending so much time doing this, but since we have so much help from experts in this field, this isn't really that much trouble. Somehow, I've managed to write three hundred measures of music in the past week, in addition to processing our Fall stock orders, sending out catalogues, working on new concerts/recordings etc. None of us sleeps very much around here...Jean-Thierry Boisseau 10:02, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
Gender bias is "objective"? What exactly do you mean? Because there aren't any women on the lists of composers of opera, that this is proof of bias?
Don't you see the logical fallacies here? You are presupposing that something must be, and then going back and proving bias because you aren't finding what you suppose must be there. People are on those lists because their operas have been performed repeatedly in a wide geographic distribution, not because there is a cabal of evil Male Establishment Dominators saying their names belong there. Consider the possibility that the lists themselves reflect reality.
If you want more operas to be written by women and widely performed, then by all means work towards that goal. I'd like to see that too. When the number and distribution of performances equals that of men on the lists, then they will be listed. And for heaven's sake try to assume some good faith of your fellow editors rather than ceaselessly attacking them as part of some vast male-domination conspiracy. Antandrus (talk) 15:01, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
- You ask why "Gender bias is "objective"?". Excuse me, but I didn't think that I had to explain the difference between girls and boys. I think that is a pretty objectively defined difference, unless you factor in "transgendered" people.
- It's not what "I" expected to see or who should be on this list; Quite frankly, I really don't care.
- Before you ask "why didn't you express this in the discussion?".
- The "Venus de Milo" syndrome came from a discussion with someone completely unrelated here, who teaches women's studies at an American University and who saw this as a textbook example.
Thank you. Jean-Thierry Boisseau 22:23, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
