Wednesday October 18, 7pm: WikiWednesday Salon and Skill-Share NYC

[REDACTED] You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop at Babycastles gallery by 14th Street / Union Square in Manhattan. We will include a look at the organization and planning for our chapter, and expanding volunteer roles for both regular Misplaced Pages editors and new participants. We will also follow up on plans for recent and upcoming edit-a-thons, museum and library projects, education initiatives, and other outreach activities. We welcome the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from all educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects. After the main meeting, pizza/chicken/vegetables and refreshments and video games in the gallery! WP:INVOLVED and the real world

The New York Court of Appeals (New York's highest court) held today that a judge may not decide an appeal from his or her own decision. The opinion is here. This is common sense, and has been the practice in New York and elsewhere for many years (see also here), but the ruling is reassuring. If only the Schenectady County Court had read WP:INVOLVED before rendering its decision, everyone might have saved lots of time.... Newyorkbrad (talk) 20:56, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

Good point. Shouldn't someone draw Euryalus' attention to this thread, as he's adjudicating on a complaint in which he is WP:INVOLVED This one):

This case is about importation of false information into Misplaced Pages. Fram wants @Ymblanter: de - sysopped, but hindsight is perfect and there was no malice - the claim is meritless. When that was pointed out Fram doubled down. It's boomerang time and he should be sitebanned - there's no other way of stopping the disruption. On the other hand, administrators are deliberately inserting false information into Misplaced Pages and have been doing so for more than a decade and from only yesterday . This is far more serious and the scope of the arbitration should be extended to deal with it. This will involve the addition of Favonian and Future Perfect at Sunrise as parties. This practice has been rightly condemned by the Committee as "pathological" and leading to inevitable de - sysop (see "Winhunter"). Note that neither of the pair are from English - speaking countries - they have no interest in preserving the integrity of en:wp. When moves are made to bring them to book they scream "long - term abuse", but then all miscreants do that. Hitler did it against the Allies, Daesh against the coalition, the Jehovah's Witnesses do it against the mainstream churches and Kim Il-Jung and Donald Trump do it against everybody. 86.159.235.235 (talk) 10:05, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon (Nov 19) and global online Misplaced Pages Asian Art Month (Nov 1-30)

Sunday November 19, 10:30 am - 4:00pm: Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon

The Misplaced Pages Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be the Metropolitan Museum of Art's second edit-a-thon, hosted on Sunday November 19, 2017 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. Following the first Met edit-a-thon in May 2017, the museum is excited to work with Misplaced Pages Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Misplaced Pages and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely. Sunday November 19 Misplaced Pages Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met (RSVP on-wiki or at meetup.com). 10:30 am - 4:00 pm in Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Uris Center for Education 81st Street entrance, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords. Manning

Thanks for mentioning the Manning case. Apologies for not considering it before posting my request, it is obviously relevant. Hopefully it does not change the issue in any significant way, but I confess to not having done that background reading. It may be that the suggested "fix template" can get done, but the more complex "should we lift it" will need a lot more evidence to be collated; which is likely to be better put together by others with more experience in that analysis than me and less subject to later claims of possible unconscious bias.
