The Yamato weapon concept is present in science fiction. The name is used for a capital spaceship's (eg. battlecruiser's) wave motion gun (an extremely powerful main weapon that requires time to charge beforehand and leaves the ship powerless and vulnerable after firing).
Examples include the Babylon 5 spinoff Crusade, the Terran Vattlecruiser in Starcraft, the Death Star ray in Star Wars.
The concept was introduced in the Space Battleship Yamato anime series hence the name.
