Gothic has been used over the centuries to refer to distinctly different things.

  • Originally a group of Germanic tribes and their language were called Gothic
  • Later the word (here originally a derogatory term used by Italians) referred to a style of northern European architecture, i.e. Gothic architecture
  • In the 20th century the word came in use for a certain lifestyle and music.
