Controversies

The Swiss Embassy in Singapore issued information in 2008 stating that European University lacks educational accreditation in its home jurisdiction of Switzerland, where the Swiss Center of Accreditation and Quality Assurance in Higher Education has responsibility for accreditation. From 1993 to 1997, European University in Barcelona had authorization from Catalonian authorities to offer programs leading to the Bachelor and Master of Business Administration degrees, but this authorization was withdrawn in 2007 due to the institution's lack of official recognition in its home country of Switzerland. In August 2009, leading Malaysian newspaper The Star included European University in a list of dubious institutions which are not in recognised accreditation registries.

The institution constantly sells dubious doctor degrees.Cite error: The opening <ref> tag is malformed or has a bad name (see the help page).

Honorary degree controversy leading to withdrawal of university name

The business school is known for constantly selling the honorary doctor degrees to the Swiss nationals, which resulted in revoking the right to name them a university by the court. In 40 years of existence, EU Business School awarded 24 honorary doctoral degrees. Holders of such a degree include Nick Hayek Jr., Gérard Dubois, Abel Gyozevich Aganbegyan, Alexander Vinokourov and Steve Guerdat among others.

On June 25, 2014, Doha Bank's CEO, R. Seetharaman was awarded a PhD in Global Governance, as was former President of Switzerland, Adolf Ogi, once invited by the school to the United Nations for the launch of his book Dolf Ogi: Statesman and Sportsman.

On June 27, 2015, Brian Cookson was awarded a Doctor of Civil Laws degree, Honoris Causa from the EU Business School.
