Uppsala (population 189,569) is a city located about 70 km north of Stockholm in Sweden. It is the site of the oldest university in Sweden, founded in 1477. Uppsala also has a Gothic cathedral, one of the largest in northern Europe, with towers reaching 119 metres. The cathedral can be seen from miles away in the very flat field landscape. Carolus Linnaeus lived in the city for many years, and both his house and garden are to be seen in Uppsala. There is also a castle in Uppsala, built by the kings of the sixteenth century. The city was severely damaged by fire in 1702. Uppsala, like many other Swedish cities, also suffered from many demolitions between about 1965 and 1975. Despite the lack of understanding of the value of the older buildings at that time, many historic buildings remain, especially in the western part of the city. Uppsala is famous for its position in the development of biotechnology.
