Welcome to my talk page. Feel absolutely free to leave me a message. I will reply on your talk page (everyone likes that yellow bar). :) Peace. - Darwinek 19:45, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Instead of adding {{Arabic}}, why not add the Arabic title itself?
When an article has an interwiki link to ar:, chances are very high that the title of the Arabic article is the requested Arabic spelling of the original title. --tyomitch 15:45, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
Regarding Reservation in India
Hi. I saw your query on Bhadani's talk page, and could not resist giving a go here. I hope you would not mind. :) The government's policies for reservation are highly controversial, given that the public in India is very very sensitive to public policies. Many of the people here (in India) believe that the hiking of seats and reservation for the OBCs (Other Backward Classes) is only a political ploy to attract votes, while the government insists that the OBCs are econimically backward and they need the government's help. There have been mass protests against this proposal by the government. There are anti-policy demonstrations all over the country (which have been widely covered by the media). I personally, believe that reservations will only reduce the quality of the students that are churned out of the system, because due to all this the students who do not deserve to be a part of an institution would get in without merit due to reservation through their castes. And also that, the creamy layer system has not been established by the government, that keeps economically good classes at bay from the OBC reservation. Hope you find this helpful! --Andy123 talk 12:11, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
- I too couldn't resist chipping in here :). Bhadaniji's talk page seems to be quite famous. If you are interested in knowing more about the group of students leading the demonstrations, you can visit their official site here. Feels good to know that people from around the world are trying to know more about this issue. - Aksi_great (talk) 18:04, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

World Cup squads
Hi. Nice job on the flag updates. However I wanted to let you that it was my intention to do the squad pages not only as rosters but also as final rankings since the groups format is on the regular World Cup pages but the final rankings are not. The final rankings are a seldom seen curiosity I had hoped to provide as adouble to the lineups. Let me know what you think, since it was my intention to do all the squad lists from 1930-62. pix
I saw the picture of Paul Bremer you uploaded.
Personally, I like to give the URL to the page that contains the pic, as well as the URL to the picture itself. I include the original caption on the image page too. I see it as a courtesy to the photographer, who may not have any rights, if they were a federal employee, taking the picture as part of their job. But, as a courtesy, we can still give them credit.
In addition sometimes a .mil or .gov site will liscense a picture from an external source, and we don't have a liscense to re-issue those under a free liscence. -- Geo Swan 22:33, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

Categories
I was wondering what category you would suggest for conservation-based NGOs - I just added Pointe-à-Pierre Wild Fowl Trust, and there's the Asa Wright Nature Centre - so there now are two of them. I'm not sure what most countries use - either then could go into a Conservation in Trinidad and Tobago cat, or they could go, together with the Scouting article into a "Civil Society"/Organisations cat (not sure if other countries use something of the sort). Any thoughts? (Sorry to see the result in the Ghana match. I'm quite conflicted - I like the Czech Republic and hoep they do well, but I'm always happy to see an African team do well. Hope you beat Italy convincingly - my wife says I have to support USA, so I am hoping for the Czech Republic and USA to get through, though I would be ok if Ghana got through instead of USA). Welcome to WP:LAKES
Hi Darwin. I just wanted to stop in and welcome you to my little pet project! I am more-or-less a novice with some of the advanced functions of the Misplaced Pages (as are most of the other participants of our project), so someone with your experience would be a huge asset to the project. I will likely have a limited internet-presence over the next 4 days, so if I don't respond to your comments or queries right away ... well, now you know :D. Anyway, it's 10 minutes to 4 am where I am, and my night-shift is almost over, therefore I am very tired and probably rambling somewhat incoherently haha. Take care, and again, welcome to the project. Em3rald 10:50, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
- I think targetting some of the poorer countries is a good idea. Or at least non-english countries because they are very much neglected. One could make an interesting observation: Rich countries generally have more fresh-water lakes than poor countries. Also, I think the categorization scheme for lakes needs cleaning up, so if you are a whiz with figuring out categories, then you are certainly welcome to help with that. Otherwise, I figure just do whatever you like. Anyway, I really am getting tired. I better stop all my rambling until I get some sleep. Take care! Em3rald 11:10, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your work on categorizing lakes! See, I knew I asked the right guy. The problem is some of the "instruction pages" for wikipedia are difficult to understand (or even find sometimes), so I was just trying to figure it all out as I go. But now you've set me straight :D thanks! As far as mountain lakes is concerned, I have thought about maybe changing it to Alpine lakes instead. This might help clarify it a little. Ultimately what I would like to see is somehow sorting Alpine lakes by region (country, state, etc). So people could look up maybe, Alpine lakes of Alberta or perhaps Alpine lakes of Chile.
But yes, thanks very much for your assistance. I will figure this categorization thing out yet. Em3rald 20:20, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

A short Esperanzial update
As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.
As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Misplaced Pages:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.
Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

- WWII history has been one of my main hobbies since I was in elementary school. It's still just a hobby, my occupation has nothing whatsoever to do with history. But, Misplaced Pages gives me a place to do something useful with what I've learned in my hobby and to work with others to bring (hopefully) informative and illustrated articles about events and people in history to the Web for anyone to read and learn from, and to provide a list of sources from which they can go to learn more about the subject in greater detail if they desire. Teluk Yos Sudarso
Thanks for your improvement to this, the most obscure article I've posted to date. (I did it because a lot of WWII Navy ship articles mentioned Humboldt Bay, which some bot had changed to T.Y.S., and there were lots of red links.) I've learned that it is NOT easy to find facts about small, frequently-renamed Indonesian bays, especially when they weren't always in Indonesia. ;-)

Demonyms
Hi, yeah, I personally do think Category:Muscovites should be renamed to Category:People from Moscow. Many of the non-American categories in Category:People by city are inconsistent with each other (some use demonyms, some use "people from", some use "natives of"). So far, the American categories seem to be the only ones that users have proposed for renaming to a consistent non-demonym "People from foo" form. I think all the others should be renamed as well as all the city categories should use the same naming convention. --musicpvm 22:27, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: FP Question
Hi Darwinek,
That's certainly a sensational view! Image quality is great apart from the banding in the sky, however I'm not too sure many people will like the top and bottom white border. It makes it look more artistic, but I'm not sure if a lot of people on FPC will appreciate that. Once cropped it may prove to be too low res compared to this. But, have a go! I personally think it reflects badly on the review process on FPC when people are nervouse to nominate something. And I don't want to bore you with a rant, but recently I've become distressed with the lack of community spirit on FPC. All that aside, I think it's definetly worth a try. Good luck! --Fir0002 09:38, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Russian cities/towns
Hi, Darwinek! The answer is no, not really. All Russian cities/towns should have at least substubs written about them, so what you are doing is quite useful. I honestly don't know. It seems kind of redundant, but perhaps there are uses I couldn't think of off the top of my head. You'd probably be better off asking about this at Portal:Russia/Russia-related Misplaced Pages notice board.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:10, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
czech
Hi I see you are still doing a good job this time on Czech places in your home country. Do you have any photographs of these places which you could use?. Because I have taken a few photos of local places which can be used to illustrate wikipedia. I think Czech already has many pictures though in the commons. Keep it up James Janderson 08:55, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
Hi the madagascar one is not a spelling mistake it has two different ways of spelling it. I'll check on the lake. Thanks for your help James Janderson 20:02, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
hi yes thanks generally I do use the google search engine to research and check articles through yahoo although it was probably wise to check the more popular spelling. I'm doing ok though overall. James Janderson 20:07, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Austronesian Language Stubs
I see you just changed a bunch of stubs for East Papuan languages from {{lang-stub}} to {{au-lang-stub}}—Naasioi language, Kol language and some others. Are you aware that the are these languages are not Austronesian? (the Papuan languages are defined as 'the non-Austronesian indigenous languages of Melanesia'). --Ngio 04:10, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- (copied from User talk:Ngio) Hello. Oh, I'm sorry. Should they be reverted to "lang-stub" or is some other stub they fit in ? - Darwinek 10:58, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. There's no Papuan language stub, so unless you feel like creating one I think you should simply revert them back to lang-stub. Naasioi language, Ata language, Kuot language, Kol language, Sulka language, Taiap language are the ones that need doing. --Ngio 19:20, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- Also Ndu languages, Kobon language, Porome language, Busa language, Yalë language, Yuri language, Ramu-Lower Sepik languages, Piawi languages, Left May languages, Amto-Musan languages. A Papuan stub cat might be nice. kwami 19:47, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
Bitis gabonica
While I appreciate that you're willing to contribute to Bitis gabonica and other viperine articles, I found it necessary to remove your last edit as it had rendered that statement inaccurate. Specifically, you were editing information that I had gleaned directly from McDiarmid et al.'s 1999 publication "Snake Species of the World: A Taxonomic and Geographic Reference, vol. 1", in which it does not mention that B. gabonica occurs in Ethiopia. If you know of a source that does mention Ethiopia as part of the range of this species, I would very much appreciate that you would add that to the article, but as a separate statement -- and please, please cite your reference! Personally, I have at least six books citing ranges for B. gabonica and none of them mention Ethiopia, so I'd be very interested to know who said that and whether it's just a report of a single specimen or not.
Regarding your edit to Bitis gabonica rhinoceros, in this case only the addition a few "Fauna of <country>" links, I'm suddenly not so sure we should be so confident in the case of Togo, despite the fact that it is currently stated as being part of the range in the article. Specifically, I just found a line in Spawls & Branch (1995) stating that Ghana and Togo are at the eastern limit of the range of this subspecies, and that they begin to intergrade here with B. g. gabonica (I'll add this information to the B. g. rhinoceros article). The distribution map supplied by Spawls & Branch indicates that the general range for B. gabonica does no include Togo (or Benin for that matter), but that there have been reports of specimens found in that area. These two countries (and at least eastern Ghana) are part of a larger region known as the Dahomey Gap; a relatively dry region that separates the rainforests of West Africa from those of Central Africa, as well as the two subspecies of B. gabonica. I think it would therefore be safer not to add the "Fauna of Togo" category to either of the B. gabonica articles. --Jwinius 23:22, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

- Did they say what happened to the poor fellow? Receiving a bite from any of the larger Bitis species while out in the bush can only be a horrible experience.
- Sure, send me a screenshot of the animal -- perhaps I can identify it. That would be fun. It may turn out to be Bitis parviocula! However, even if I was convinced that it is B. gabonica, I would not add any statements to the B. gabonica article based on this (kind of) evidence: that would be assuming too much. It comes down to the old adage "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." In this case, that would entail a proper identification of the snake and a reasonable description of where and when it was found. That information would then have to be published, so that everyone can have access to the information and make up their own minds regarding the source. But, since we don't have that in this case, we'll just have to wait for somebody else to do it. In the mean time, it's safer for us to just stick to what has been published on the matter. --Jwinius 00:25, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
(Replying to your message in User_talk:Jwinius#Bitis gabonica)
Thanks for sharing the photographs, but that's definitely not B. gabonica. It's B. arietans, the common puff adder! Looks look a juvenile too. Even so, bites from specimens this size have been reported to be very painful. Here's a better photo of B. arietans: note the distinctive series of chevrons down its back and the light crossbar between the eyes over the top of the head: no other species in Africa are like that. --Jwinius 10:44, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- (Replying to your message in User_talk:Jwinius#Bitis gabonica)
- Bothrops insularis? Not right now. I'm currently busy with the Viperinae and probably will be for some time to come. I still have a quite a few articles to create and many others that are still not much more than stubs. It takes a long time to research and write any of those articles properly.
- As for whether I feel categorization of "Fauna of xy" is very useful, I'm afraid not. I see two problems. First, it's too general. Right now we may not have too many articles dealing with the fauna of Ghana, for instance, but what about in 10 years time? There could be thousands. Better to create categories that do not have the potential to become so large. I would suggest only creating categories that will never achieve such proportions, such as "Dangerous Snakes of Ghana". Such smaller categories could then be added to "Categories dealing with Ghana", for example.
- Secondly, from the viewpoint of at least some species articles, country categories (of any kind) are not always practical either. Take B. arietans: a species that is extremely widespread, occurring in some 40 countries across Africa and the Arabian Peninsula: would it really be practical to add all of those country categories to the article? If you did, it would become rather difficult for anyone to find what they were looking for in such a long list. In other words, the current system has its limits. Unless that's changed, a solution might be to create only a category for the "Venomous Snakes of Africa" instead. Hope this helps! --Jwinius 12:22, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

West Irian Jaya
Hi there. I was wondering about why you switched the Indonesian "Kepala Burung" for "Jazirah Doberai" in the West Irian Jaya article. What language is it??? DOes it also mean "bird's head"? And, is it more appropriate than the Indonesian?? Perhaps it would help if the language was stated (as it should have been with the Indonesian). Depending on your answer, and in the spirit of wikipedia, i may argue that the indonesian was more appropriate. ha ha. Thanks --Merbabu 04:27, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

A Czech journalist contacted me
See this email - I was contacted by a journalist from Respekt, and I get the feeling from the questions that when he says "Misplaced Pages" he means "English Misplaced Pages." I'd hope he knew about cs: as well! So someone suggested I ask you to read the questions and get in touch with him, for a local perspective. Hope you can help - David Gerard 15:59, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- It can't hurt to contact him - just say I suggested you could supply local information. Of course, now I don't know if you even write much on cs: :-) Even if cs: is locally considered awful, it can be considered, um, a land of opportunity! Yes! A new frontier to make into a good encyclopedia! Or something :-) Those of us doing en:-centred press get enough static from the
Frenchother language Wikipedians about the en:-centricity of the journalists in question. (As if we told them to ask those questions that way.) - David Gerard 23:09, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi mate alright? I reckon you needed a break! Yes Welsh is compulsory and is taught in all the school but I live in south-east Wales not very far from England so a very small minority speak it. I know a few words and phrases as others do but I consider myself English. However if you go up into Merthyr Tydfil , Powys and theBrecon Beacons and north Wales such as Clwyd and that they speak majority Welsh. I don't know about the strength of the Welsh football team!! To be honest I think we under achieve. SOme of the players in the past have been great e,g Ryan Giggs and mark Hughes but we don't really perform in relation to talent. Nice to talk, Ernst Stavro Blofeld 14:43, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
Volcanoes
Hello. Please do not add Indonesian volcanoes to "Volcanoes of Indonesia" category. Those volcanoes are marked by subcategories of this cat so it is unnecessary to mark it in that way. - Darwinek 14:43, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hmm - well, some were, some weren't. I want consistency, so i chose one way - inclusion. Alternatively, all the other volconoes there should be removed from that category? By the way, what do you think about the Category: Mountains of Indonesia? Ie, most (all?) Indonesian mountains are volcanoes. I guess i saw it as another bit of doubling up. Merbabu 14:45, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- OK, in the spirit of list of Indonesian sub-categories, I thought of replacing CategoryVolcanoes of Indonesia with Category: Volcanoes of the Lesser Sunda Islands (for Nusa Tenggara volcnoes of course). I started with Ebulobo but I am not sure if it worked OK. Firstly, what do you think of the idea, and secondly, why doesn't it work on Ebulobo? Thanks Merbabu 14:57, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- PS, or do you think Volcanoes by island is better than by region??? I notice Flores and Java have heaps, but do we really need seperate categories for say Bali or Lombok? Merbabu 14:59, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry to keep bothering you about this, but while we are on the topic of categories, when I have tried to create them according to Misplaced Pages instructions (ie, they are simple and suggest they are automatically created) i just get red links. Ie, I created Ecology of Indonesia and it was red for a few days, that one day it was a true link.
- As for the specifics I thought it best if it was down by broad region - eg, Sumatra, Java, Lesser Sundas, Maluku, Sulawesi. Could Flores be a sub-sub-category under Indonesia and Lesser Sunda? Merbabu 15:14, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Original script templates/categories
Hi Darwinek, I'm letting you know I've created a category to hold a number of clean-up tasks similar to {{Arabic}} for various languages, Category:Articles needing original script. So far I've made {{Cyrillic}} (which you requested), {{Chinese script}}, {{Greek}}, and {{Hebrew script}}. "Red" vs. "Beautiful"
You are right, in modern Russian "krasivoye" is used for "beautiful". "Krasnoye", however, not only means "red", it is also an archaic (and poetic) form for "beautiful".—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 17:45, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
