Revision as of 03:23, 5 March 2018 edit107.144.143.163 (talk) Respectfully, article is sourced. Family history tab contains numerous publications (in French, Arabic and English to a lesser degree) that detail the family history as very clearly documented. Nothing here is not common knowledge in the Levant, and this article remains neutral and informative.Tags: Undo External link added to disambiguation page← Previous edit | Revision as of 03:30, 5 March 2018 edit undoMatthewVanitas (talk | contribs)Autopatrolled, Extended confirmed users, Pending changes reviewers, Rollbackers120,868 edits Reverted good faith edits by 107.144.143.163: You cannot just cite the family page. '''Azzi''' is the anglicized form of "القزي" meaning "He whom is of the ]", or less literally as "The ]". More correctly referred to in its full form as "El Azzi", it is commonly abbreviated to simply "Azzi" in the West with the ] omitted altogether.<ref>http://www.azzifamily.com/</ref>
The House of the Azzi or "بيت القزي" is a ] dynastic family found almost exclusively in the coastal settlements of Lebanon, primarily ], ], ], and ]. It traces its history back to the silk trade and is considered to be a part of the ], but not necessarily aristocracy, that developed during the height of the ] in ]. Though the silk trade has long since floundered in the region, the house of Azzi continues its tradition of mercantilism through various commercial endeavors around the world, to a far lesser degree than historically. The Azzi family also has a noteworthy military and ] tradition, and once were notable landowners with numerous country houses dotting the coastlines of Lebanon. During the Lebanese Civil War, the Azzi family, along with many influential families once prominent in Lebanon, lost most of its wealth and land.
The family belongs to the ] ethno-religious group, but is of Italian origin. The name itself, "القزي" or "El Azz-ee", is a "]" descriptive of their traditional occupation, "Azz" being the Arabic word for ]. With regards to their arrival in Lebanon, oral tradition from ] and ] indicate that the family arrived in Lebanon fairly recently (Between 1591 and 1635) and is of Italian origin, arriving at the invitation of Emir ] as a result of his friendship with the ]. Such immigrant families are not uncommon in Lebanon, especially among the gentry and aristocracy, such as ] and ]. The early Azzi's, whose name was no doubt entirely different (and most likely lost to history), were brought to Ottoman Syria (now Lebanon) in order to supervise/augment the emir's silk production. The family made landfall in what is today the ] of Lebanon, and remained there until hostilities with the ] forced most of the family into more Northern territories. The conflict between the Druze and the Azzi family is longstanding, dating back hundreds of years, but has since settled into a relatively amicable calm.
The Lebanese Azzi family has no relation to another Italian family of the same name, which bears a ] relationship and has its origin with the first name Azzo, pronounced akin to the word "Piazza". However, many Lebanese Azzi's returned to Italy bearing their new name and differentiating the families is difficult without genealogical records.
