Burford Capital, founded in 2009, provides specialized finance to the legal market. It operates as a finance and professional services company worldwide with principal offices in New York, London and Chicago. The company offers a range of legal finance and litigation finance solutions to lawyers and clients engaged in litigation and arbitration.

Its businesses include litigation finance and risk management, asset recovery and other legal finance and advisory activities.

Financials

According to its latest financial reporting, in 2017, income increased by 109% to $341.2 million (2016: 163.4 million), driven by a 127% increase in income from litigation investment to $318.2 million (2016: $140.2 million). In the same period, Burford made $1.3 billion in new investment commitments.

In its 2013 financial year Burford deployed $62 million (£36 million) of capital in legal cases and generated a 25% increase in profits before tax to $42.5 million, up from $34.1 million in 2012.

The company reported a 23% increase in revenue from litigation in the 2014 calendar year, up 23% from 2013. Total income of $82 million was up 34% from 2013 after increased revenue from its insurance unit.

Burford raised $225 million in a public debt deal in 2017.

London Stock Exchange

Burford has been publicly traded on the London AIM Stock Exchange (BUR:LN) since October 2009 and issued further shares in a follow-on in 2010. The company currently has 204.5 million shares outstanding. In 2017, Burford received the AIM Award for Innovative Fundraising of the Year.

History

Burford Capital was founded by Christopher P. Bogart and Jonathan T. Molot on September 11, 2009 and is headquartered in St. Peter Port, Guernsey.

In December 2016, Burford acquired Gerchen Keller Capital.

In January 2015, Burford acquired one of its indirect subsidiaries, Focus Intelligence Ltd., a business intelligence firm that specialized in asset tracing and judgment enforcement.

In February 2012, Burford acquired the UK based litigation insurance provider, Firstassist, and launched its UK litigation finance business.
