Ælflæd, Princess of Mercia was the mother of Roland, and wife to Charles, King of the Franks. She had ealier been married to Æthelred King of Northumbria, but when he died, she was offered in marriage to Charlemagne's son Charles again, after they had made the contract in 796. Her father was Offa, King of the English.
