Pedro Trebbau (born Karl Peter Trebbau Millowitsch, May 20, 1929) is an German-born Venezuelan zoologist. His career has been characterized in promoting and preserving of Venezuelan nature and wildlife. Emphasizing his researches about the Venezuelan turtles and the Amazon River dolphin.

Biography

Born in Cologne, since his youth he had decided to dedicate his life to the study of nature. He obtained a bachelor's degree in Biology at the universities of Frankfurt and Freiburg, as well as Veterinary degree from the University of Giessen.

He arrived in Venezuela in 1953 and enrolled at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV), based in Maracay, Aragua. Before graduating, he returned to Cologne to inform his family about his decision to remain in Venezuela, obtaining the Venezuelan nationality in 1957. After that, he started working as technical director of El Pinar Zoo, in Caracas. Between 1965 and 1970 he also worked as a professor at the Institute of Tropical Zoology of the UCV. In 1968 participated in the Operación Rescate (Operation Rescue), an expedition in the region of Guayana that protected 10.000 animals of 53 different species that would be submerged within the construction of the Guri Dam.

In 1974 Trebbau founded the Caricuao Zoo (inaugurated in 1977), being in charge until his resignation in 1979. Later he will work as zoo coordinator for the National Parks Institute (Inparques), and as Special Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment. From 1980 to 1983 he worked as president of the Humboldt Cultural Association. In 1989 he was part of the advisory committee for a new Wildlife Law, and in 1991 he became president of the National Foundation of Zoological Parks and Aquariums.

Trebbau has been the producer and host of several TV programs around ecology such as: Zoológico Infantil (Children's zoo), La Fauna (The Wildlife) and Campamento en la Selva (Jungle Camp), which were broadcast by the former National Television-Channel 5 and Venezolana de Televisión, all of them with the purpose of bringing the Venezuelan audience closer to its fauna and flora.

His scientific research has been published in many academic papers and books such as Venezuela and its turtles (1984), co-authored with Peter Pritchard, one of the most significant references about this topic.

He got married in 1964 to Helena López Fraino, great-granddaughter of general and former president Hermógenes López.
