Slayer is a character in the Guilty Gear fighting game series, making his first appearance in Guilty Gear XX: The Midnight Carnival. He is a rather tall vampire, though unlike most vampires, he seems entirely unaffected by sunlight. He spends each entire round smoking his pipe, and if defeated, he merely lies on the ground looking amused rather than being unconscious. He is also accompanied, largely, by his wife Sharon.

Gameplay

His simplistic overdrives are perfect for buffering into, and his command throw, with its stagger time and easy buffers, is a staple. His "Dandy Step" moves are perfect for punishing (and creating) a miss. However, his greatest strength lies in his ability to "phase out" of the screen momentarily and, thus, completely evade his opponent's attacks and even counterattack immediately. This is called "backdash cancelling" (BDC) because Slayer can jump cancel the backdash. This applies the invulnerability of the backdash to his jump. Furthermore, the jump can be cancelled into a special move, applying the invulnerability frames of the back dash to the move. Slayer also tends to deal more damage at a time on average than many of the other characters.

In Guilty Gear XX: Slash, his backdash's invincibility is sharply reduced, making the technique significantly less effective. In addition, his "Undertow" attack is no longer unblockable, but instead has super armor properties, making it more difficult to interrupt. His mixup game is greatly improved by the addition of a fake Mappa, which dashes him forward, but does not attack, forcing the opponent to guess in order to avoid being thrown or hit.

Story

Background

Slayer founded the Assassin's Guild, but disappeared shortly thereafter. His original intentions, like many notable founders of Assassin's Guilds in fiction, were altruistic. Unfortunately, he finds, upon returning, that his syndicate is far from his original idealistic view of it, and decides to dismantle it. He seems to be connected to Gabriel in some significant way, and seems to know quite a lot about various political affairs, most notably the Post-War Administration Bureau (PWAB).

Guilty Gear XX: The Midnight Carnival

Slayer's Story Mode begins with a visit to Ky Kiske, claiming that it is "customary for the king of the night to ask for permission from the protector of the day before venturing into the sunlight." He has the apparent motive of either observing the cast, or warning them of being targeted by the PWAB. He has three endings: in one, he defeats Eddie, who wanted to possess Sharon. In the second, he faces Venom, and explains that his victory was because of hesitation in Venom's heart. In the third, he defeats I-No, and has a brief conversation with That Man about current events.

Sharon

Slayer (right) and Sharon, as shown in Slayer's Guilty Gear Isuka ending.

Sharon is Slayer's wife, and apparently immortal and invincible; for one thing, she can survive getting drained of blood by Slayer without any apparent lasting effects (one of Slayer's opening scenes before a battle shows him completely draining her). In one of Eddie's endings, Eddie melts after attempting to possess her, and I-No (who set him up to this) comments, "Illness, parasites... Nothing sticks to her." Sharon's exact nature remains unknown.

Music References

Slayer is named for the band of the same name. Several of his attacks (Under Pressure, Dead On Time, All Dead, and It's Late) are named for Queen songs. His Undertow is named for an album by Tool, while his Royal Hunt is a Danish metal band.

Sharon is possibly named for Sharon Osbourne, or Sharon den Adel of the symphonic metal band Within Temptation.
