Füzuli (also known as Fizuli, Karjagino, Karyagino, or Sardar), Template:Lang-hy, is a city and the capital of the Füzuli rayon of Azerbaijan. On 23 August 1993, the city fell to Armenian forces during the Nagorno-Karabakh war and since then is administered as part of Hadrut Region of the unrecognized Republic of Artsakh ever since. Due to the ongoing war, it is currently an uninhabited ghost town. Fizuli is a de jure internationally recognized territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
History
Once known as Qarabulaq, the village was renamed Karyagino in 1827 to honour Pavel Karyagin, a Russian military hero of the Russo-Persian War. It was renamed in 1959, in honour of the 16th-century poet Fuzûlî. During the 1993 Summer Offensives of the Nagorno-Karabakh War, Füzuli was captured by Armenian forces and - though parts of the Füzuli rayon were later retaken - the city itself remains in occupied territory, essentially a ghost town. The territory of Fuzuli district is 1386 km2, and the population is about 105 thousand people. There are 1 city, 1 urban-type settlement, 75 villages and other settlements in the district. There are 13 settlements and 20 villages that were exempted from Armenian occupation. Currently, 51,000 internally displaced citizens have been settled in the area. The rest of the population of Fuzuli settled as IDPs in other districts of Azerbaijan.
