Once known as Qarabulaq, the village was renamed Karyagino in 1827 to honour ], a Russian military hero of the ]. It was renamed in 1959, in honour of the 16th-century poet ]. During the ] of the ], Füzuli was captured by Armenian forces and - though parts of the ] were later retaken - the city itself remains in occupied territory, essentially a ghost town. The territory of Fuzuli district is 1386 km2, and the population is about 105 thousand people. There are 1 city, 1 urban-type settlement, 75 villages and other settlements in the district. There are 13 settlements and 20 villages that were exempted from Armenian occupation. Currently, 51,000 internally displaced citizens have been settled in the area. The rest of the population of Fuzuli settled as IDPs in other districts of Azerbaijan. |
