Nomination of Business Initiative Directions for deletion or help

Help please with Business Initiative Directions entry/article. Hi Edward,

First of all sorry if I'm writing in the wrong place and sorry for my poor English (I'm not an English native speaker) I write to you because you wrote me back, and I have not been able to contact with someone else inside Misplaced Pages. Neither I understand the way this website works... I find no chat boxes nor anything. I must confess I'm and old man, and perhaps because of that I found this site incredible hostile. I write to you because since august someone posted an entry on Business Initiative Directions. Its a Spanish marketing agency that sells different products and services (I have no economic relation with them, except for the fact that the owner is an old friend and an old man like I) I want to be clear on the fact that yes, I know this company, and yes, 30 years ago (or more I don't recall) I worked with them several times. It's a marketing company, but the entry accuse them of selling "fake awards". They don't sell awards at all. They do advertising and corporate events. In their events they charge a fee, this is no secret, neither is illegal in anyway. They have 50 years operating inside Spain and now inside the European Union legal framework. Their HQ is located behind the Ministry of Defense in Madrid... every soul there knows them. They offer international business gatherings, and charge a fee for that (among other things more related to traditional marketing, like flyers, magazines and banners... they don't do digital because most of them are old people that don't even have social media) This article is destroying them... based on nothing at all but the opinion of a company that got the invitation to the event and got mad because they wanted to go to an business convention in Paris for free... this people then wrote to a so called NGO that decided to wage war on this small Spanish marketing agency. They created the Misplaced Pages post and used all the bad press against the company to destroy their prestige...everybody has bad press... this is not fair, neither I humbly believe, was the idea behind Misplaced Pages. I think Misplaced Pages was meant to be an encyclopedia for humanity. Not a corporate revenge instrument. Please, help us and guide us on how to deal with this. My friend is asking me if their version of the post could be taken into consideration. All complains of the NGO are addressed there, and even a mixed version will be acceptable for them, but what is cruel and brutal for this company reputation is to post only the NGO version... that is not fair.

Season's greetings!

Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. is wishing you a Merry Christmas!

This greeting (and season) promotes WikiLove and hopefully this note has made your day a little better. Spread the WikiLove by wishing another user a Merry Christmas, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past, a good friend, or just some random person. Happy New Year!

Spread the Christmas cheer by adding {{subst:Xmas3}} to their talk page with a friendly message.

Misplaced Pages Asian Month 2017: Invitation to Participate

Hello! Last year, you signed up to participate in Misplaced Pages Asian Month (WAM) 2016 on the English Misplaced Pages. The event was an international success, with hundreds of editors creating thousands of articles on Asian topics across dozens of different language versions of Misplaced Pages.

Editors who create at least four articles will receive a Misplaced Pages Asian Month postcard!

Also be sure to check out the Misplaced Pages Asian Art Month affiliate event - creating articles on Asian art topics can get you a Metropolitan Museum of Art postcard!

If you're interested, please sign up here for the English Misplaced Pages. If you are interested in also working on other language editions of Misplaced Pages, please visit the meta page to see other participating projects. If you have any questions, please visit our talk page.

A demo wiki is up and running!

Dear members of WikiProject Genealogy, this will be the last newsletter for 2017, but maybe the most important one!

You can already now try out the demo for a genealogy wiki at https://tools.wmflabs.org/genealogy/Main_Page and try out the functions. You will find parts of the 18th Pharao dynasty and other records submitted by the 7 first users, and it would be great if you would add some records.

And with those great news we want to wish you a creative New Year 2018!

About the Everette Taylor article

Hi, I am writing concerning the UPE tag on the Everette Taylor article. I wish to remove it as I have actively edited the page, adding info and citations and I didn't collect a dime for my edits, I don't want my reputation smeared over some other editor's mistake. I hope my work on the page is adequate enough for you to consider taking off the banner. Thanks

Majid Al Futtaim : "too promotionnal issues"

Information are directly extracted from regional media sources but also from the US (e.g CNN, Bloomberg). Since the beginning of my intervention on this page (but also before if I am right), several sections have been taken off because they were "too promotional".

In most of the cases, my interventions are objective bullet points, they are simply presenting and don't have any subjective elements. It is simply not consistent and coherent to systematically remove them. They respect the rules of Misplaced Pages. Shall I request third parties to step in in order to validate the extracts in question ?

Proposed deletion of Grange Hotels

Notice

The article Grange Hotels has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:GNG and WP:NCORP, fail to find any reliable independent sources with significant coverage of the hotel chain (rather than the owner).

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — MarkH21 (talk) 09:31, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Raj Matharu

Notice

The article Raj Matharu has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:GNG and WP:BASIC. No significant coverage in any reliable independent secondary sources - only trivial coverage about his brothers as a whole.

Problems

  • Some wikis will not be able to edit for a short period of time on 19 March (UTC). This will start at 15:00 UTC. It will last up to 15 minutes but probably shorter. You can see the list of affected wikis. This is because of network maintenance. You can still read the wikis.
  • Editors who use Firefox to edit with the visual editor had a problem with copying text. When they tried to select text that included footnotes, templates or block images in the middle they would often only get part of the text. This has now been fixed.
  • Some maps didn't work for a while on 8 March. This has been fixed.

NPR Newsletter No.17

Hello Edwardx,

News
Discussions of interest
  • Two elements of CSD G6 have been split into their own criteria: R4 for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons (Discussion), and G14 for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page (Discussion).
  • {{db-blankdraft}} was merged into G13 (Discussion)
  • A discussion recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for theatrical plays.
  • There is an ongoing discussion on a proposal to create subject-specific notability guidelines for chemicals and organism taxa.
Reminders
  • NPR is not a binary keep / delete process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The deletion policy and its associated guideline clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See a classic example of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the R template index. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.
NPP Tools Report
  • Superlinks – allows you to check an article's history, logs, talk page, NPP flowchart (on unpatrolled pages) and more without navigating away from the article itself.
  • copyvio-check – automatically checks the copyvio percentage of new pages in the background and displays this info with a link to the report in the 'info' panel of the Page curation toolbar.
  • The NPP flowchart now has clickable hyperlinks.

DYK for Karen (orangutan)

On 18 March 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Karen (orangutan), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in 1994, Karen became the first orangutan to have open heart surgery? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Karen (orangutan). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Karen (orangutan)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

  • When you use rollback you will be able to get a confirmation prompt on most wikis. It asks you if you wanted to do the rollback. This is to avoid misclicks. You will have to opt in to get it. On German Misplaced Pages it will be an opt-out feature from 28 March.
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 19 March. It will be on non-Misplaced Pages wikis and some Wikipedias from 20 March. It will be on all wikis from 21 March (calendar).

Future changes

  • Admins will be able to block someone from editing a page or a namespace. This already works on a few Wikimedia wikis. You can read more. If your wiki wants to be an early tester of this, you can tell the developers.
  • Advanced item Toolforge will shut down the Ubuntu Trusty job grid. This will happen the week of 25 March. Tools that use this grid needs to be moved to the new Debian Stretch job grid. If they haven't, they will be taken offline. Maintainers can restart the tools later. Users may not be able to use them in the meanwhile. You can see a list of affected tools.

"strong and stable"

No Deal is better than a bad deal

I've decided this might be notable after all, and have expanded it out of a redirect. Feel free to chip in. Ritchie333 13:33, 26 March 2019 (UTC)

Thanks. To the efforts of you and Philafrenzy, it is looking much better. Can't have anyone calling it "weak and wobbly" can we? Edwardx (talk) 15:38, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
It's rock solid, no need for any indicative votes. Philafrenzy (talk) 19:19, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
Hear, hear. Edwardx (talk) 19:25, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
P.S. There would certainly be enough sources to develop Brexit means Brexit from a redirect on the same basis. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:42, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
I can't believe somebody would say that no DYK is better than a bad DYK though. Ritchie333 12:45, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

When in the cloud, do as the APIs do

Half a century ago, it was the era of the mainframe computer, with its air-conditioned room, twitching tape-drives, and appearance in the title of a spy novel Billion-Dollar Brain then made into a Hollywood film. Now we have the cloud, with server farms and the client–server model as quotidian: this text is being typed on a Chromebook.

File:Cloud-API-Logo.svg
Logo of Cloud API on Google Cloud Platform

The term Applications Programming Interface or API is 50 years old, and refers to a type of software library as well as the interface to its use. While a compiler is what you need to get high-level code executed by a mainframe, an API out in the cloud somewhere offers a chance to perform operations on a remote server. For example, the multifarious bots active on Misplaced Pages have owners who exploit the MediaWiki API.

APIs (called RESTful) that allow for the GET HTTP request are fundamental for what could colloquially be called "moving data around the Web"; from which Wikidata benefits 24/7. So the fact that the Wikidata SPARQL endpoint at query.wikidata.org has a RESTful API means that, in lay terms, Wikidata content can be GOT from it. The programming involved, besides the SPARQL language, could be in Python, younger by a few months than the Web.

Magic words, such as occur in fantasy stories, are wishful (rather than RESTful) solutions to gaining access. You may need to be a linguist to enter Ali Baba's cave or the western door of Moria (French in the case of "Open Sesame", in fact, and Sindarin being the respective languages). Talking to an API requires a bigger toolkit, which first means you have to recognise the tools in terms of what they can do. On the way to the wikt:impactful or polymathic modern handling of facts, one must perhaps take only tactful notice of tech's endemic problem with documentation, and absorb the insightful point that the code in APIs does articulate the customary procedures now in place on the cloud for getting information. As Owl explained to Winnie-the-Pooh, it tells you The Thing to Do.

DYK for Dennis Lennon

On 2 April 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Dennis Lennon, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Dennis Lennon hoped his design for the interior of the Queen Elizabeth 2 (pictured) would be the "setting for the world's best party"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Dennis Lennon. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Dennis Lennon), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Kenmont Primary

It's not a given that it passes WP:GEOFEAT - "Buildings, including private residences and commercial developments may be notable as a result of their historic, social, economic, or architectural importance, but they require significant coverage by reliable, third-party sources to establish notability." - Lets have the discussion at Talk. Fob.schools (talk) 12:00, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

Please read the first part: "Artificial geographical features that are officially assigned the status of cultural heritage or national heritage, or of any other protected status on a national level and which verifiable information beyond simple statistics are available are presumed to be notable." The school is a listed building. Edwardx (talk) 12:18, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
Its not an artificial geographical feature. Its a building. Let's have the discussion at the appropriate venue which is where I started it. The facts are in dispute. We need to discuss it. Asserting/reverting your opinion is not collaborative. Please revert your removal of the template or it goes to WP:ANI Fob.schools (talk) 12:26, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
