Template:Infobox Indian urban area Nandyal is a town and a municipality in Kurnool district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The town has a unique place in India since it is the only Parliamentary constituency which produced a President, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy and a Prime Minister, P.V.Narasimha Rao though both of them were not locals of Nandyal. Narasimha Rao got elected from Nandyal with the highest majority of votes in independent india and perhaps in the world.
Geography
Nandyal is located at 15°29′N 78°29′E / 15.48°N 78.48°E / 15.48; 78.48. It has an average elevation of 203 metres (666 feet).
Demographics
As of 2001 India censusTemplate:GR, Nandyal had a population of 151,771. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Nandyal has an average literacy rate of 63%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 55%. In Nandyal, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Places of interest
Nandyal is surrounded by 9 temples of lord Shiva (Called Nava Nandi). Among them, Mahanandhi is famous. One can see a continuous stream of water pouring into an artificial pond. It is believed that this water is so pure that one should travel to the Himalayas to see a place with such pure water in India. The source of water, however, is still a mystery. Nandyal is also very well known because of its lentil crops. Nandyal was the native place of Pingali Suranna who was a well known poet in the court of the Vijayanagar Emperor Sri Krishnadeva Rayalu. There is an engineering college established during the reign of P V Narasimha Rao. There are numerous villages surrounding Nandyal town. There is a big lake constructed during Vijayanagar times which serves the water needs of the town. The town is notorious for the poor drainage facilities during the rainy season.
