Astrid Smeplass (born 29 October 1996), known professionally as Astrid S, is a Norwegian singer, songwriter and model. In 2013, she had her breakthrough when she placed fifth in the Norwegian version of Pop Idol called Idol - Jakten på en superstjerne.

Biography

Growing up in the village Berkåk, of Rennebu in Norway, Smeplass got into music at an early age.

At the age of 9, she submitted to participate on MGPjr. with ten year old Celine Helgemo under the artist name AC: The Blue Snoopies. The duo was not selected to participate in the music competition, but Celine later won Melodi Grand Prix Junior 2007 with the song "Bæstevænna" which was about Astrid.

At the age of 16, she participated in the Norwegian version of Pop Idol in 2013, and at that time released a single, "Shattered", under the name Astrid Smeplass. The song was cowritten by American singer-songwriter Melanie Fontana. Astrid released her first single "2AM" under her new artist image at the age of 18 on Universal Music. "2AM" was released in the US in 2015. She also released a cover-version of the single "FourFiveSeconds".

At the age of 17, she quit high school to focus on her musical career.

In 2016, Smeplass supported Troye Sivan on his European tour, and she released a self-titled EP on 20 May 2016.

In 2017, Smeplass provided backing vocals on "Hey Hey Hey" by American singer Katy Perry from her album Witness.

Her cover of Cezinando's "Vi er perfekt men verden er ikke det" was featured in the soundtrack for the fourth season of Skam and Smeplass performed it on a roof during the P3 Gull 2017 ceremony. The cover became more popular than the original version.

On 30 June, she released her second EP, Party's Over, which featured the singles "Breathe" (No. 3 in Norway) and "Such a Boy" (No. 2 in Norway). Two weeks later, the acoustic rendition of the EP was released, with an additional song titled "Mexico".

In September 2017, her single "Think Before I Talk" topped the Norwegian charts and peaked at No. 14 on Swedish, where it was certified platinum. It was also certified gold in Denmark, where it peaked at No. 9.

She won Årets Spellemann (Artist of the Year) in February 2018 at the annual Spellemannsprisen (the Norwegian equivalent of the Grammys), being the first female artist to do so since 2003.

Also in 2018, a song composed with fans through Instagram and Twitter. Fans had a day to send lyrics for the next song. Later on the Youtube channel, Astrid S has published both a video showing how it composed the song, "Relevant" and a video with the song itself.

On 1 October 2018 Astrid released a teaser for the single "Emotion" through her social media profiles. Universal Music confirmed that the track would be released on 12 October 2018. She did her first performance of the song for NRK's P3 Gull 2018. On 4 December 2018 the single "Closer" was released, but it didn't chart in Norway.

Vevo DSCVR picked Astrid S as one of their Artist to watch list 2019.

On 1 February 2019 the single "Someone New" was released.
