Luke Alvez is a fictional character on the CBS crime drama Criminal Minds, portrayed by Adam Rodríguez.

Background and characterization

Alvez was born in the Bronx, New York. Inspired by his father's military service, he joined the U.S. Army and served as a part of the 75th Rangers Regiment in Iraq, as he told Emily Prentiss. After he was discharged, Alvez joined the FBI and worked in several different divisions before being assigned to its Fugitive Task Force, where he became responsible for capturing fugitives on the run. While training with the Task Force, he studied Calvin Shaw, a disgraced former FBI agent convicted of murdering his confidential informant. Later, one of Alvez's targets was a man named Daniel Cullen, a.k.a. "The Crimson King". During the manhunt, the Fugitive Task Force team could never get a positive identification on Cullen during his crimes, so Alvez's partner Phil Brooks went undercover to lure him out. The operation was a success, and Cullen was recaptured, but not before he had managed to severely torture Phil. The incident traumatized Alvez ever since.

Alvez has a dog named Roxy (whom García thought at first it was his human girlfriend).

Character arc

In the Season 12 premiere he works with the BAU to catch the "Crimson King", one of the escapees that attacked his old partner. The team discovers that the real killer is "Mr. Scratch" who taunts the team by turning over the real "Crimson King", who was tortured to the point he no longer remembered who he was. After that Alvez decides to join the BAU full-time and was Hotch's last hire.

Following the tragic events of Season's 12 finale titled "Red Light", in the Season 13 premiere titled "Wheels Up", Alvez appears to be the only team member that got unharmed from the car crash caused by Mr. Scratch. He is also the one who comforts Garcia, as she was the one who discovered Stephen Walker's body, who did not survived the accident. When the team discovered where Peter Lewis was hiding Emily Prentiss, Alvez, Reid and Simmons were the ones headed to the location first. Alvez chased Mr. Scratch to the rooftop of the building. In his try to escape from Luke Alvez, Mr. Scratch slipped off and left hanging from the building side allowing Alvez to catch up. Afterwards, Mr. Scratch pathetically, and with a dose of inside irony, begged Alvez to save him, but he wasn't willing to do that. So Mr. Scratch, knowing that there was no way out, he let himself free by losing his grip and fell down to his death.

In the sixth episode of Season 14, title "Luke", four people living in various cities along the East Coast are tortured and murdered over a three-day span, the BAU is called in and attempts to connect the spree with a DEA-Federal Police manhunt for an infamous Mexican cartel hit man. Luke juggles moving in with his girlfriend, Lisa. Luke Alvez becomes emotionally involved in the investigation of the case, because of his time spend as an undercover agent on the DEA a few years ago. As the true identity of the Unsub is revealed, the case hits even closer to home for Luke, when the true Unsub murders his old partner Phil Brooks and goes after his girlfriend Lisa. For that reason Prentiss took him out of the case and told him to go home. Instead, Luke ignored Prentiss' orders and chased down the killer. At the end of the episode, Luke and the team caught the killer, but because of his actions, Emily demoted Alvez from Supervisory Special Agent to Special Agent. This is the first time in the history of the BAU that a team member got demoted, even though it was for a short period of time.
