The 2019–20 I-League will be the 13th season of the I-League, one of the 2nd divison leagues for association football clubs in India, since its establishment in 2007, also known as Hero I League due to the sponsorship deal with Hero Motor India. A total of 11 teams will compete in the league.
Chennai City are the defending champions, having won the previous season. TRAU F.C. joined as a promoted club from the I-League 2nd Division. Shillong Lajong F.C. were relegated from the I-League last season and will play in the second division in the 2019-20 season.
As of 2019-20 season, there are no more restrictions on a number of signed foreign players, but clubs can only register up to five foreign players for a single match-day squad.
Indian Arrows cannot sign any foreign players as they are the AIFF developmental team.

To preserve chronological evolvements, any postponed matches are not included to the round at which they were originally scheduled, but added to the full round they were played immediately afterwards. For example, if a match is scheduled for round 7, but then played between rounds 8 and 9, it will be added to the standings for round 8.
