The Barisha raid was a United States military operation in Barisha, Idlib Governorate, in northwestern Syria. According to US officials including President Donald Trump, the leader of ISIS Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed.
Raid
On 26 October 2019 U.S. Joint Special Operations Command's (JSOC) 1st SFOD-D (Delta Force) conducted a raid into the Idlib province of Syria on the border with Turkey that allegedly resulted in the death of al-Baghdadi. The raid was launched based on a CIA Special Activities Division's intelligence effort that located the leader of ISIS. The Syrian Democratic Forces provided direct and extensive support to the operation.
It was reported by the BBC that al-Baghdadi detonated a suicide vest after being cornered by US special forces.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on 27 October 2019 that American forces used helicopters, jets and drones through airspace controlled by Russia and Turkey. He also said that they had Baghdadi "under surveillance for "a couple of weeks" and "two or three" raids had been cancelled because of his movements". He continued "The forces targeted the compound using eight helicopters, which were met with hostile fire. The commandos entered the building by blowing holes in the wall, avoiding the main door which was booby-trapped."
He said that "Russia treated us great... Iraq was excellent. We really had great cooperation" and Turkey knew they were going in. He thanked Russia, Turkey, Syria, Iraq and the Syrian Kurdish forces for their support.
Casualties
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), 9 people were killed including one child, two women and some high-ranking ISIS leaders. One Guardians of Religion Organization commander was believed to be among the casualties.
Reactions
International reactions
Turkey – Senior aide to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Fahrettin Altun, stated to Reuters: "Turkey was proud to help the United States, our NATO ally, bring a notorious terrorist to justice ... We remember today Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s civilian victims and our military heroes, who lost their lives to protect the world from Daesh (Islamic State) terrorists." The Turkish Defence Ministry also confirmed on 27 October that Turkish and U.S. military authorities exchanged and coordinated information ahead of an attack in Syria’s Idlib.
United Kingdom – Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the death of Baghdadi an "important moment" but said that the "fight was not over."
Russia - Russian Major-General Igor Konashenkov responded to Trump's announcement by stating that "The Russian Ministry of Defense does not have reliable information on the operation by U.S. servicemen... on yet another ‘elimination’ of former IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi." Russia had claimed his death in May 2019 by their air strike, however Russia TV stated the news of his death on October 27th 2019 is the first to be confirmed.
