English and Hindi language Indian news website
The Quint is an English and Hindi language Indian news website founded by Raghav Bahl and Ritu Kapur after their exit from Network18.
The website has spread misinformation, on multiple occasions.
History
The website initially launched in January 2015 on Facebook, a website in March 2015. As of 2016 it has more than 95 editorial staff, and half of its content is original and half from social media and press releases. Most of The Quint's web traffic is from Indian young adolescents. In April 2016, The Quint's parent company Quintillion Media partnered with Bloomberg News to create BloombergQuint.
Controversies
In 2018, Raghav Bahl and the office of The Quint were raided by Indian income tax authorities, in connection to an alleged case of alleged tax evasion and money laundering. Bahl rejected the allegations and held the raids to be an attack on free media.the Editors Guild of India had put out a statement saying, “While the tax administration is within its rights to make inquiries in compliance with the relevant laws, it should not exercise those powers in a way that could be seen as an intimidation of the government’s critics.” The Committee for Protection of Journalists called the raids a “direct attack on press freedom” and said it was concerned about claims that the officials were attempting to clone Kapur’s phone data, which may contain sensitive journalistic data.
Reception
The news-portal won a host of awards at WINFRA South Asia Awards 2017.
On 5th January 2018, Chandan Nandi, an op-ed writer with a dubious track-record, wrote a story confirming Kulbhushan Jadhav as an agent of RAW. The story was retracted by the Quint, after the factual accuracy was challenged from multiple quarters. The story was picked up by Pakistani media and would be later quoted by Pakistan in a related International Court of Justice case.
Factcheckers have documented the site to have spread disinformation, on multiple occasions..
