Martin J. Cline was a researcher at the University of California at Los Angeles who was the first to transfer a functioning gene to an intact living mouse. He was censured by the agency that was funding his research, the US National Institutes of Health, in 1980 for this work. His research also described the molecular genetic alterations in cancer, especially leukemia.
