In the summer of 1825, during the Caucasian War two promising Russian generals Grekov and Lisanevich gathered more than 300 elderman of the formally subject to Russian Empire Chechen village of Gerzel-Aul. The aim was to impose penalties for the locals support to Chechen rebels, and Yermolov's intention was also to force the stop of any relations with Chechen insurgents. After the eldermen of the village were gathered, the Russian generals started insulting them. One of them grabbed Uchar-Hadji by his beard, in response to that he stabbed both generals with his dagger.

Uchar-Hadji was of Chechen descent and lived in the Chechen village of Gerzel-Aul, which at that time was subordinated to the Kumyk princes. He belonged to the Sala-Uzden nobility of Vashindaroy, which are of Chechen origin and are related to the Chechen tribe Aukhovtsy.
