Kristen "Kit" Ashley (born Kristen A L Moutaw: April 8, 1968) is a New York Times and USA Today author of more than 75 books in 14 languages with over three million copies sold.

After being rejected for publication by traditional publishers, she continued writing for fifteen years before she started publishing independently on Kindle and building a self-publishing career. She published several works within a year. In 2013 she joined Grand Central Publishing, becoming a hybrid author (using both independent and traditional publishing methods). Her influences are Janet Evanovich, Judith McNaught, JK Rowling, Carl Hiaasen.

Writing

In interviews, Ashley states that she struggled with sleep due to an active mind, which she turned to creating stories that she continued developing over time. Her heroes are often "Alpha" males with the heroine bringing a strong character to match them. Family, friends and music are recurring thematic elements. She claims that she does not tone down or restrict her characters into the typical hero and heroines found in romance novels, this being part of the reason for rejections by traditional publishers.

Though mainly in the romance genre, she covers other sub-genres in her work, including; fantasy, erotica and paranormal

In September 2019, Passionflix began production of The Will based on Ashley's novel of the same name. Filming will take place in Massachusetts and be released on February 14th, 2020. The cast will include Megan Dodds, Chris McKenna, Martin Dingle Wall and Patrick Byas. Louise Alston will direct this film adaptation.

Early life and family

Though born in Gary, Indiana, Kristen grew up in a multi-generational home in Brownsburg, Indiana. Her father, Roy Gilbert Moutaw Jr, lawyer and county police officer, joined Porter County prosecutor's staff as a full-time deputy in 1985 and was President of the Valparaiso Americans, a Pop Warner football affiliate. Her mother, Patricia Ann Lovell neé Mahan, spent 23 years as an auditor for Hendricks County Bank and Trust. Patricia Lovell died in 2009. Erika Ann Wynne neé Moutaw is her older sister as well as her Executive Administrative Assistant and Project Manager in her company, Rock Chick LLC. Roy Gilbert "Gib" or "Gibby" Moutaw is her younger brother.

Four generations of Ashley's family graduated Purdue University, including Ashley and both of her parents. Ashley spent 18 years as a charity executive prior to starting her writing and publishing career. She is now a full-time writer.

In May of 2003, Ashley married David Mark Ashley in Bath, England. They divorced in 2013.

Ashley has lived in Indiana, Colorado and England and currently resides in Phoenix, Arizona.
