Winx Club is an animated television show that, as of 2004, is currently airing on Fox Kids in the U.S. It features fictional characters that use magic.

Overview

In the first episodes, Bloom, a red-headed teenager from the Earth city Gardenia, stumbles upon Stella, who is locked in combat with an ogre and several other monsters.

Stella is about to be blasted into smithereens when Bloom, frightened by the monsters, unwittingly lets off a magical blast, which hits the ogre. The ogre manages to catch Bloom, but Stella comes to the rescue with a blast from her scepter. Exhausted, Stella faints and Bloom brings her home.

When Bloom wakes up the next day she thinks it was all a dream. Later that day, the ogre attacks again and this time he brings a troll with him. Luckily, the specialists from Red Fountain (a school for boys) arrive and save the girls.

Stella invites Bloom to attend Alfea, a school for fairies in another dimension. At first, Bloom's parents are skeptical, but Stella shows them the school and they are soon convinced to let Bloom attend Alfea.

At Alfea, Bloom meets Tecna, Flora, and Musa. The five girls form the Winx Club, a group of first-year fairies. The Winx Club do everything in their power to stop the evil plans of the Trix, a group of three evil witches.

During the series, Bloom and her friends discover more of their powers, and grow to be the most powerful fairies ever.

Although not Japanese, Winx Club shares many traits with Magical Girl animes. There are transformation sequences, magical gizmos, announced attacks, and of course, a romantic subplot.

The Winx Club

Bloom is a young girl of "magic and dreams" (magia e sogna). Originally hailing from the small town of Gardenia, Bloom was unaware of her great magical potential until it activated when an unfriendly ogre attacked her. Princess Stella took note of Bloom's "Winx" and got her enrolled at the Alfea School for Fairies. At first Bloom had little control over her powers, but has since mastered them to a fair degree. Bloom is a nice girl, and despite being new to magic and Magix she's become the unofficial leader of the Winx Club. However, she occasionaly acts rather self-righteous with her new friends and she can leap to conclusions.

Stella is a young girl of "style and beauty" (moda e bellezza). She is the princess of planet Solaria. Stella is the oldest of the Winx Club because she was held back a grade for an accident she caused. Stella is very vain and loves attention. She's very sensitive toward other people though. Her parents are in the middle of a devorce and it hurts her to see them break up.

Stella is the Italian word for "star".

Musa is a young girl of "music and free time" (musica e tempo libero).

"Musa" is a pun on musica, the Italian word for "music".

Flora is a young girl of "love and nature" (amore e natura).

Flora means "plant life" in Italian.

Tecna is a young girl of "science and technology" (scienza e tecnologia)

The name "Tecna" is derived from tecnologia, the Italain word for "technology".

The Trix

Icy is a young witch described as having a "heart of ice" (cuore di ghiaccio)

Darcy is a young witch described as the "lady of darkness" (signora dell'oscurità¡).
