Bernie Dieter is a cabaret artist, songwriter, musician, author, and performance artist born in Köln, Germany described as the Queen of Weimar punk kabarett and known for her unique voice, dark humour and original songs 'She sings like Marlene Dietrich, like Frank N. Furter, like Kate Bush on speed.' she is the lead singer and songwriter of Bernie Dieter and the Vier and creator of The Little Death Club.

History

She was named as one of Time Out magazine's Top Ten "Cabaret Superstars", become the first ever female MC of the Olivier Award winning show La Clique , and created the iconic Kabarett Little Death Club which has gone on to tour the world picking up several high profile awards

Bernie's Grandmother's (Oma) family ran a travelling circus in Germany pre World War II so performance was in the blood from a young age. Growing up in Koln, Germany she ran away from home as a sixteen year old to live above a drag club in Berlin and has cited that as a launching point for her life as a performer "the queens were always a huge inspiration. The way they can transform themselves, make an audience laugh hysterically, sing along with joy and really get people to connect with each other - which is something that I always try to have in my show."

Style

Having been described as "The princess of punk rock" and “The love child of a mad genius and wicked seductress – fierce, ravenous and excited to push the boundaries of traditional cabaret… outrageously entertaining, exceptionally eccentric and daringly different" she is "a raven-haired German cabaret goddess. She’s 100% vixen, fabulously funny, and commands an audience like nobody I’ve ever seen." , Bernie is a truly modern feminist chanteuse she's “taken the Weimar essence of cutting-edge, satirical social commentary as well as the sex and debauchery, and dragged it into the 21st century,” blending dangerously funny original songs, sequins and satire with a cut-throat wit, and a deviant eye for debaucherous mayhem! Bernie Dieter can mesmerise with ahauntingly beautiful ballad one moment and bring the house down with raucous laughter the next. Unashamedly filthy and dangerously satirical, Bernie is a world-class example of a modern Weimar kabarett diva, in all of her East Berlin, gin-drinking, promiscuous glory. She is also known for her incredible prowess in the realm of audience interaction but always with an eye for celebrating diversity and losing boundaries to create an inclusive atmosphere at her shows. Her style is heavily inspired by the rocky horror picture show, Siouxsie Sioux and Marlene Dietrich with her music mostly written in English and German.

Little Death Club

First created in 2016 "born as a late night spiegeltent lock in, a place where all of the best acts in the world could come and perform their filthiest, most outrageous material." and inspired by the Weimar republic’s dens of iniquity, gender bending sexual freedom and celebration of difference at a time of political turmoil , Bernie Dieter set out to create “a glorious celebration of difference, of the feminine, the masculine and everything in between, of strength and beauty and confidence.” the show has gone on to take the world by storm since.

Winning ‘Pick of the Fringe’ and ‘Best Cabaret’ awards in 2018 and 2019 in Adelaide, the show debuted at in the Spiegeltent at Edinburgh Fringe 2018 to sell out crowds and rave reviews, making The List (magazine) prestigious ‘Top 10 Best reviewed shows 2018’ out of 4,094 shows at the Festivals. The show made its London debut with a 10 week season from April to June 2019 at Underbelly's Southbank Festival Spiegeltent where the show went onto collect eighteen 5 star reviews before being the first headline show of the inaugural North Australian Festival of Arts in Townsville Australia, July. August saw a return to the Spiegeltent at Edinburgh Festival Fringe to a sell out season to become one of the most successful cabaret shows in Festival history and cemented Bernie Dieter as one of the standout cabaret artist of her generation.

In January 2020 the show returned to Perth (where the show first in 2016) with a headline award winning 5 week sold out season which garnered 5 star reviews from every reviewer. Bernie also appeared as the front cover of The West Australian Festival guide calling her the "Queen of Fringe"
