Safoora Zargar (born in 1993) is an Indian student, activist, and student leader from Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir. She is M.Phill student of the Jamia Millia Islamia University and the member of the Jamia Coordination Committee. She got married to Saboor Rafiq Sirwal in her hometown Kishtwar on 6th October, 2018.
Safoora Zargar is a scholar of Jamia Millia Islamia and student activist from Kishtwar residing in Delhi since her childhood.
Early Life
Safoora born in 1993 at her residence in Kishtwar, she went to Delhi in 1998 with her family, when her father posted in neighboring Faridabaad, part of National Capital Region (NCR).
As an activist, she encouraged the youth and fellow members to fight for their rights. In the year 2020, she joined anti-CAA protests in Delhi. As a result, she was arrested by Delhi Police on April 13, with police claiming she was among those who organised an anti-CAA protest and road blockade under the Jafrabad Metro station in Delhi on February 22-23. The Delhi riots are widely acknowledged to have been sparked by incendiary comments made by Kapil Mishra, a leader from the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata party (BJP). Safoora has also charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Controversies
After the arrest of Safoora Zargar, lots of people on social media started sharing unrelated images and videos for defaming Safoora. She was 3 months pregnant at the time of her arrest. The most viral allegation which targeted her pregnancy alleged that she was pregnant by Hindus at Shaheen Bagh. These people shared a couple sex video claiming that Safoora was in the video. But the fact checking website Alt News reveals that all the allegations are fake and baseless. The video was taken from Pornhub and there was PornHub model Selena Banks in the video.
Many other social media posts targeting Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) scholar and activist Safoora Zargar for her marital status and pregnancy are doing the rounds, with people claiming that she is unmarried and that her pregnancy was discovered when she was lodged in Tihar Jail. But the allegation became baseless when The Quint fact checked all these allegation which reveals that these allegations were fake. All the photos shared claiming to be Safoora was tampered. The online campaigns indicated that she is a victim of Islamophobia. Delhi Police haven't taken any action against the online vilification campaigns and trolls yet.
