Starfleet Security is a fictional Starfleet agency in the Star Trek universe. Starfleet Security is first introduced in the original Star Trek (TOS) with the USS Enterprise's compliment of "redshirt" security guards, many of whom meet a quick death.
In Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG), several Starfleet Security members are main characters: Worf and Tasha Yar. Starfleet Security has also been part of the plot of several Pocket Books novels and has been discussed in numerous Star Trek technical manuals.
Star Trek: The Original Series (23rd century)
In the 23rd century (the time period in which Star Trek is set), Starfleet Security is an established part of Starfleet, although none of the show's main characters are members.
Starfleet Security characters frequently enter a dangerous situation with the main characters and are killed, demonstrating the hazardousness of the situation and creating dramatic tension. Their red uniform led to the expression "redshirt" to denote an expendable character in a work of fiction (and especially science fiction).
The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine (24th century)
Starfleet Security members have bigger roles in the series set in the 24th century, with security officers Tasha Yar and Worf being recurring characters on The Next Generation. Some plots center on these characters. Starfleet Security is complicit in working with Starfleet Intelligence to recover an illegal Starfleet cloaking device in "The Pegasus".
In Star Trek: Deep Space 9, Starfleet Security was also presented as a source of Federation ground troops, many of whom are deployed around Earth to defend the planet against a perceived Dominion threat in "Homefront". Starfleet Security is established as a career field in which it is possible to rise to the rank of admiral ("The Adversary").
Notable personnel
- Ensign Garrovick: A Starfleet Security officer from the episode Obsession (TOS episode).
- Lieutenant Leslie: Career security guard onboard the USS Enteprise (NCC-1701)
- Lieutenant Galloway: Only other security guard, besides Mr. Leslie, to appear in two episodes of The Original Series. Killed in the The Omega Glory (TOS episode).
- Pavel Chekov: According to numerous Pocket Books novels, in between his tour as Navigator onboard the Enterprise, and Executive Officer of the USS Reliant, Chekov served as Security Chief of the Enterprise with most of this service as a Lieutenant Commander in the non-canon (but much assumed) second five year voyage of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) circa 2373 and 2378.
- Worf: Security Chief onboard the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D)
- Tasha Yar: Worf's predecessor, killed in the line of the duty
- Michael Eddington: Starfleet security defector
- Admiral Raner: Head of Starfleet Security (TNG: "The Pegasus") and implicated in wrongdoing during the cloaking device incident.
