B'Day is the second studio album by American R&B singer Beyoncé, released by Columbia Records on September 1, 2006 (see 2006 in music) outside North America, on September 4, 2006 worldwide (Beyoncé's twenty-fifth birthday, hence the title) and on September 5, 2006 in Canada and the United States. Beyoncé confirmed in an interview on a Spanish television program that there will be a re-release that will feature a duet with Shakira.

History

Production and title

After wrapping up her role as Deena on the upcoming film Dreamgirls, Knowles had "bottled up so many things, so many emotions, so many ideas" that she decided to leave her vacation early to record the album in a timespan of two weeks, recording three songs a day. She did this without telling her father/manager (Mathew Knowles) or her record label. At that time Knowles had booked the whole Sony Studios, simultaneously recording with an "all-star team of producers", including Rodney Jerkins, Rich Harrison, Pharrell, Stargate, Cameron Wallace, Walter Milsap, and Swizz Beatz. Rapper T.I. also joined the sessions to record a verse for "Upgrade U", but like Lil Wayne he did not make the cut on B'Day.

The track "Resentment" is a cover of a song originally recorded by Victoria Beckham. The track, which was also covered by Jazmine Sullivan in 2004, appeared on the The Real Beckhams DVD release as a bonus song. The track features slightly altered lyrics, and thus a writing credit for Knowles.

Chart success

The album debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 with first week sales of 541,000 copies (224,000 more than her previous album Dangerously in Love), and at number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, being a huge success. In the UK it peaked at number three, debut with 35,000 units sold and has gone on to sell over 328,000 units there. It has sold 2 million copies in the U.S. and 3.5 million worldwide. According to mediatraffic, B'Day was the 12th biggest selling album of the 2006 worldwide.

The first single off the album was "Deja Vu", a '70s funk-influenced uptempo classic Beyoncé beat, featuring her beau Jay-Z. The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. "Ring the Alarm", the second single, peaked at number eleven in the Hot 100, and number three in the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. "Irreplaceable" has rapidly climbed up the charts, and is number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It has become B'Day's most massive and successful hit becoming its first number-one in the U.S., topping the digital, pop, and R&B charts on Billboard. What is rather unexpected is her second B'Day collaboration with Jay-Z, "Upgrade U", is climbing up the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, based solely on airplay. Its current peak position is eleven. The song has also peaked at number fifty-nine on the Hot 100.

Also,Get Me Bodied has entered on Hot Bubbling Under Chart R&B/HipHop Songs, and it's currently at # 1 on that chart.

B'Day is nominated for five Grammy Awards including: "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance" for "Ring the Alarm", "Best R&B Song" for "Deja Vu", "Best Contemporary R&B Album", "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration" for "Deja Vu", and "Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical" for "Deja Vu" (Freemasons Club Mix - No Rap) (remixed by Russell Small and James Wiltshire).

Beyoncé has confirmed in a recent interview with Univision that there will be a re-release for B'Day It will include 5 new songs (Beautiful Liar Feat. Shakira, Upgrade U Feat. T.I., Irreplazable (Spanish Version), Deja Vu (Spanglish Version), Ring El Alarma (Spanglish Version)). The album will include the original songs too. There is no confirmed new album art.

In additon, it has been reported that Beyoncé thinks so highly of the remixes done by the Freemasons, that she has commissioned them to create an entire remix album of B'Day.
