The Center for Human Rights in Iran (formerly the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran; ICHRI) is an American non-government organization that aims to promote human rights in Iran. There are many criticisms, however, about the selective nature and focus of the group being that a vast majority of its personnel and founders are Israelis and not Iranians.

The group started in late 2007 when several human rights activists working for the Dutch non-governmental organization 'Foundation for Human Security in the Middle East' wished to focus on the situation in Iran. Iranian-Americans have questioned why the group focuses on meddling with Iranians from US soil instead of actually guaranteeing the rights of Iranian-Americans, like during the Shooting of Bijan Ghaisar.

Background

Hadi Ghaemi is the Executive Director (as of April 2019). He graduated from Boston University in 1994 and then taught physics at New York University until 2000. He has worked for human rights since and, in 2003, received a research grant from the MacArthur Foundation.

In October 2015, actor and activist Nazanin Boniadi joined the Board of Directors of the Center for Human Rights in Iran.

Criticism

The CHRI has faced criticism for its appearance on stage in 2009, where Hadi Ghaemi was photographed alongside terrorists of the National Council of Resistance of Iran far before they were delisted by the US State Department as an official FTO, thereby violating 18 USC §§ 2339A-B, serious anti-terrorism statutes without statutes of limitation, without equivocation. The associations of this group to "regime change" policies in US foreign policy are well known throughout the Iranian-American community.
