: TRM, your ban was just lifted, and you are already engaging the kind of unnecessary snark at FAC be extended to your tone at FAC. Could you please reign in the snark, stop putting words in my mouth that I have never stated or thought, and let the discussion happen this time without labeling other good-faith concerns as "nonsense" and creating a battleground over something that was common and routine for years at FAC? I would really appreciate it, thanks, ] (]) 01:34, 31 December 2020 (UTC) |
Revision as of 01:34, 31 December 2020
Anyone wishing to return the favours of the various reviews I do here? I'd be grateful for a look at 1997 Football League First Division play-off Final which is at FAC!!!! Many thanks. And of course, I'll do quid pro quo reviewing (to my normal incredible standard) for anyone offering their opinions! |
New project: EFL Championship play-offs etc, getting all the "finals" articles to GA, see here. Feel free to help!!! |
Today, I will mainly be working on both the 1991 Football League Second Division play-off Final and the 1987 FA Cup Final: any help gratefully received. |

Seriously?
Passive aggressive veiled accusations of anti-Semitism will not stand. If it ever repeats, anywhere, Debresser will be at ANI, to explain himself. This "complaint" is frivolous at best, deeply insulting and damaging and contrary to WP:NPA at worst. The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
You really had to add 8 fact tags to the Rosh Hashanah artcile one day before it goes to the main page? I would almost say you were intentionally trying to prevent that from happening... Debresser (talk) 23:12, 17 September 2020 (UTC)
- Debresser Your accusation is disgusting, don't come here and accuse me of any such thing. If you realise anything you know that I always check OTD when Howcheng has updated it. It wasn't me who placed the yellow tag on the page. It wasn't me who made the rule up at WP:Selected anniversaries which excludes items that are tagged. It wasn't me who added a whole bunch of unreferenced material to the page. You need to take a long hard look at yourself and your attitude here. Frankly, your passive aggression needs to be addressed in a wider forum. Go fix the issue rather than hurl veiled accusations, that's just purely despicable. I also note you did literally nothing to improve the article, so well done you. Consider yourself removed from this talk page indefinitely. The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Sunderland A.F.C. and edit warring.
Evening RM. Last year an editor started trying to insert promotional content into the Sunderland article (fan names mostly). It went to the talk page and it was ultimately rejected (and the editor has created a dedicated Sunderland supporters page, which is more appropriate). However he also had a few edits rejected by myself / yourself over name dropping in the stadium section, and a wholesale puff piece promotion for the charity. He's slipped them in a few months ago, I reverted yesterday or so ago, and he is now heading to 3RR (he's just come back from his last ban). Can you cast your eye over and let me know if I am going mental. Koncorde (talk) 01:34, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- Just as a heads up, when reviewing the sources added to the Sunderland A.F.C. supporters article after Maxim submitted it for GA I realised the same sources were added to the main Sunderlsnd A.F.C. article before hand. Clearly I didn't pay attention enough over the last year or so to protect the FA status.
- Anyway, I have started clearing down the Supporters article to what can be cited and supported by RS (and putting it into proper English) you can see some of the working here. Koncorde (talk) 12:31, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 November newsletter
The 2020 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round going down to the wire. Our new Champion is Lee Vilenski (submissions), the runner-up last year, who was closely followed by Gog the Mild (submissions). In the final round, Lee achieved 4 FAs and 30 GAs, mostly on cue sport topics, while Gog achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on important battles and wars, which earned him a high number of bonus points. The Rambling Man (submissions) was in third place with 4 FAs and 8 GAs on football topics, with Epicgenius (submissions) close behind with 19 GAs and 16 DYK's, his interest being the buildings of New York.
The other finalists were Hog Farm (submissions), HaEr48 (submissions), Harrias (submissions) and Bloom6132 (submissions). The final round was very productive, and besides 15 FAs, contestants achieved 75 FAC reviews, 88 GAs and 108 GAN reviews. Altogether, Misplaced Pages has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!
All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.
- Gog the Mild (submissions) wins the featured article prize, for a total of 14 FAs during the course of the competition.
- Bloom6132 (submissions) win the featured list prize, for 5 FLs in round 4.
- Rhododendrites (submissions) wins the featured picture prize, for 3 FPs in round 3 and 5 overall.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2021 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! Your hypocrisy didn't go unnoticed
You supported a blurb for Sean Connery based on the fact that he was "probably the most iconic/legendary/etc Scottish actor ever." Some years ago you opposed an RD for Sridevi for lack of "notoriety" despite the fact that she received state funerals in India
I remember calling out your western bias and racism back then and you denying it. Can you at least now admit that you are racist? At least, that will clarify things Manish2542 (talk) 13:52, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
- That is absolutely an unacceptable personal attack. Blocked. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 13:55, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
- Cheers 78.26. No, I’m not racist, I just call it as I see it. But enjoy the time out Manish2542. The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Space!!!!) 13:58, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
I fully enjoyed it. By the time I noticed the block, it had already been lifted. My accusations clearly hit home. You supported the blurb for a western celebrity who died of old age but refused an RD for an Indian one who died suddenly. Your bias is clear. If it isn't racism, I don't know how else we can call it. More generally, by supporting the blurb for Sean Connery, who was just a celebrity amongst others, you degraded the standards of Misplaced Pages for the sake of your own groupie like reaction to the death of one your revered actors. Speaks a lot about your lack of maturity.
Feel free for another block 78.26. You are the prosecutor and judge here. What a fair judicial system Misplaced Pages has. Pathetic, really. Manish2542 (talk) 19:20, 8 November 2020 (UTC)
- Indeed, with someone who edits as infrequently as you do, a block would need to be considerably longer than 31 hours to have any effect. Thanks for pointing that out. P-K3 (talk) 19:40, 8 November 2020 (UTC)
- I've blocked them indefinitely this time. They can explain their behaviour in an unblock request. Black Kite (talk) 19:59, 8 November 2020 (UTC)
- Ah, snap. Now that's happened. Manish2542 it's odd, it's as if you somehow think I care what you think. I don't. But it feels like you have an obsession with me. I'm flattered, but as you can see, I have many, many, better things to be getting on with. Enjoy the time out. The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Space!!!!) 20:01, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

1900 FA Cup Final
Hello again, TRM. Hope you are well and keeping safe.
Thanks for offering to help with this article and for the link you provided yesterday which I've included in the 1901 and 1902 articles. As I said to Gerda, I've had frequent GAN involvement but at FAC I've only done three reviews including Burnley F.C. after I helped WA8MTWAYC with its PR. While I don't want to impose on anyone, I think it would be wise to seek advice before a first-time nomination at FAC. Gerda suggested a PR so I will kick that off. Harrias did a very thorough GA review last month and it got into DYK yesterday.
If you can think of anything that I should add, amend or delete for FAC purposes it would be a great help. You have had football articles promoted including 1978 FA Cup Final, so I'd appreciate any and all advice you can give me. I'm aware there may be pitfalls for the unwary in the FAC nomination process itself, regardless of subject-matter. Gerda gave me some good advice on presentation and anything else on that would be great.
I'll start the PR and take things from there. Thank you again, all the best and keep safe. No Great Shaker (talk) 14:12, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
- No Great Shaker do you have access to things like British Newspaper Archive or Newspapers.com? There's usually a load of good stuff in those contemporary reports which could be included? Also, at FAC you'll be expected to include the "best" reliable sources, so are there written histories of Bury and/or Southampton and/or FA Cup finals which you haven't included at this point? The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Space!!!!) 23:52, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hello, TRM. I don't subscribe to the newspaper archive sites but I started using the Times archive (free up to 1985) after Harrias recommended it in the GA review, and I've added everything I could find there about the earlier rounds. I don't know if there are online archives of the Bury Times or the Southern Daily Echo but I do know that the history section of the Bury F.C. site is almost entirely sourced to the Bury Times. I don't think anyone has ever written a good history of the Shakers. As far as I know, the books referenced in the article are the best (or among the best) for Southampton's history. Mike Collett is probably as good as source as any for the history of the competition. I'm working on six final articles (1898 to 1903) and, in all of them, I've made sure that the online sources are good – e.g., 11v11.com and the FA site.
- I've set up the PR but I realise it's a case of being patient and evidently that is also true of FAC, as it is of GAN. There's no rush, though, and plenty more to be done. Thank you again for all your kind help which is much appreciated. Best wishes and keep safe. No Great Shaker (talk) 21:08, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- Okay, I'll have a dig around and see what I can find. Incidentally, can you access this? Just a tester. If not, I can always get screenshots and share them with you. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Space!!!!) 09:13, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hello again, TRM. Yes, I can see the clipping which isn't very happy reading for anyone who supports your rival team, ha! By the way, I see you've worked on articles about the Boat Race and that was reported in some Times pages I viewed from 1898 to 1903. You might have already seen them but thought I'd mention it. Thanks again. No Great Shaker (talk) 16:51, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- No Great Shaker hi. Good to know, I can definitely find some Guardian sources for the FA Cup finals you're updating. British Newspaper Archive is more difficult because they don't (I don't think) support clippings "for all to see". So I'll work a different way out for those. Do you have your email active? As for the Boat Race, yes, I worked every single Boat Race article up to GA standard (as a minimum) so that's 160-odd GAs and half a dozen FAs. I didn't access those archive (or The Times) when working on them so that's something I should do at some point in the future, but I'm currently working my way through all the play-off final articles (as you know) so that's my current project. The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Space!!!!) 17:16, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

The fact was ... that Michael Jackson's manager expected him to return from an injury and perform in the 2001 Football League First Division play-off Final? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/2001 Football League First Division play-off Final. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, 2001 Football League First Division play-off Final), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

- The article passed GA and was nominated for DYK by one editor, reviewed by another, and moved to prep by a third, and my function was merely to move a set of eight hooks including yours into the queue. You had no part in the process and did not in any way breach your restrictions. I note your request, which I take to mean that if someone nominates one of your articles for DYK in the future, you do not wish the nomination to proceed. - Cwmhiraeth no because to do so denies the encyclopedia and our readers of my brilliance. Just don't post about the topic from which I'm banned on my very talk page. It's tantamount to trickery. The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Space!!!!) 16:00, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:36, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Filmography sourcing
It is universally accepted consensus that filmographies are primarily sourced to the credits in the original works. This completely satisfies WP:V. They are not sourced to "Other Misplaced Pages articles" or anything else, they are sourced to the actual concrete reliably-published works to which they refer. WP:FILMOGRAPHY is completely right about this and needs no adjustment. However, I agree that Griffin's filmography in particular has enough "uncredited roles" that it would need more reliable secondary sources. Elizium23 (talk) 02:47, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- Nope, it is most certainly not universally accepted consensus. Find a single biography with an unreferenced filmography that we've featured on the main page in the last three years. And the flimsy WP:FILMOGRAPHY gives dismal advice on not even having to reference films which don't even have articles! It's a total joke and is completely trumped by WP:V. Arguing against it is completely detrimental to our readers' experience of Misplaced Pages. Articles should stand alone, they should comply with policies (not flimsy Wikiproject "advice") and they should be written to benefit the audience. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Space!!!!) 07:57, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

- Well, FAC is so slow, it's anyone's guess really. Could fall down to a moment of bad timing or a day when the co-ords aren't promoting, and it's game over. That's probably something that needs to be addressed next year really, especially as we saw this year Gog's last second (alright, last-half-hour) promotion could have completely over-turned things. Relying on other processes makes this a bit of a hit-and-miss situation. The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Space!!!!) 20:03, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- Exactly that happened last year (or I'd have won two years running now). But, that is part of the game. I knew I needed to time my nominations to get the four in the two months (which means nomming around 20 days into the first month of the previous round). FA and DYK are the only two parts of the cup that work like this though, you can just write 100 GAs and nom them all for one round, and so long as you generate enough interest, you'd score 3,500 points. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski 20:27, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

My sincere apologies
I wanted to find a way to reach out to you to present my apologies. I read your last comment and realised that out of all persons, I targeted the wrong one. I remembered you from two years ago when I saw your support for the Sean Connery blurb and "had" to vent the frustration on somebody. It was absolutely unfair as in the end you were the one who posted the RD I wanted two years ago and even, as you explained, lowered the notability criterion to correct a real or perceived western bias. It was quite undignified of me to call you a racist. That's something I don't do in real life and quite ironically, I usually criticise those who always resort to such types of accusations to shut up those they disagree with. I hope you accept my apologies and be sure that they are sincere. You may inform the others so that there's no misunderstanding. Farewell Varoon6964 (talk) 13:26, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Working on the Wikicup review for the Signpost, for which I'm trying to choose one image to represent each user's contributions. The best I've found so far for you is File:Manchester United vs Chelsea FA Cup Final 2018.jpeg, which has the advantage of being from one of your featured articles, and the disadvantage of... well, being a little mediocre as an image, useful as it is to the article. Hurricane Iota ITN candidate
Exactly! Hasty, overhyped nomination that predicts hurricanes to become catastrophic to human civilisation. More like a crystal ball bid. Best to nominate at the moment a hurricane actually becomes a catastrophe. By catastrophe, a hurricane that causes more deaths than the common monsoon in the tropics that prove to be deadly every year. Too many hurricane and typhoon ITNs in the past month.--CyclonicallyDeranged (talk) 07:11, 18 November 2020 (UTC)

Need some help re: an image.
Hi @The Rambling Man, Amakuru, and Masem:. Pardon my pinging all of you at once here. Needed a little bit of an assistance.
Per our conversation and your guidance here Misplaced Pages:In_the_news/Candidates#(Posted)_RD:_Anjum_Singh and Misplaced Pages:Media_copyright_questions#Fair_use_guidance, I reached out to the gallery, first by phone and then by email, and they had a photograph of Anjum Singh. I gave them this link to upload the image rather than send me the image and for me to upload. They did that here and I went in and cropped the image File:1605980398183 0 Anjum.jpg and used it at Anjum Singh. I can share the email communication, but, that will result in my personal email being visible, and I would prefer not to do that, if possible.
Today, @Fitindia: tagged the image for deletion here with a comment that I do not fully follow. Can I ask for some assistance here with what needs to be done here? Thanks again in advance. Ktin (talk) 20:22, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- WP:OTRS is the route here for your benefit. Send the material on to them and you'll get assistance there. Well done on your success, let's make it work out! The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Space!!!!) 20:29, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- The Rambling Man, Thanks so much. Quick follow up question -- would I have to drop an email to them? or contact them via WP? I see that link says email, but, not able to find the email ID. Thanks in advance. Ktin (talk) 21:30, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) @Ktin: yes, OTRS is the way to go it. As an additional point, generally if you're cropping an image on Commons then you should upload it as a separate new file rather than overwriting the original one. And provide a link back to the original from the summary of the new one. That way it's clear and transparent that your work is a derivative of the original. It may be that this has added to the confusion about whether the gallery actually licensed the image or not. Cheers — Amakuru (talk) 21:32, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- This link might help, or else on WP:OTRS there's a link to add a "help" note to your talkpage which will be attended by an OTRS volunteer. The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Space!!!!) 21:33, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- The Rambling Man, Thanks much. Just dropped them an email.
- Amakuru, dang. I thought I was doing the better thing by uploading on top of the same image in order to maintain traceability. Ktin (talk) 21:40, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi The Rambling Man! I dropped out of ACE because it just wasn’t right for me at this time in my life (real life is going to get much more hectic next year, in good ways), but I did want to drop you a note saying I appreciated the words you wrote in your guide about me. I’m unfortunately mainly behind the scenes these days because of time constraints, but I absolutely view this as a content-first project and think the role of admins and functionaries who have shifted to background work needs to be supporting the content workers. It meant a lot to see that it comes through. Anyway, thanks :) TonyBallioni (talk) 04:31, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Motion: The Rambling Man topic ban lifted enacted
A motion regarding The Rambling Man case at Requests for Clarification and Amendment has been enacted after it reached majority support. The motion is as follows:
The Rambling Man topic ban from the Did You Know? process (Remedy 9 in The Rambling Man case) is lifted, subject to a probationary period lasting six months from the date this motion is enacted. During this period, any uninvolved administrator may re-impose the topic ban as an arbitration enforcement action, subject to appeal only to the Arbitration Committee. If the probationary period elapses without incident, the topic ban is to be considered permanently lifted.

Could you please reign in the snark, stop putting words in my mouth that I have never stated or thought, and let the discussion happen this time without labeling other good-faith concerns as "nonsense" and creating a battleground over something that was common and routine for years at FAC? I would really appreciate it, thanks, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:34, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
