Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is the third part of the trilogy initiated by the 2003 film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and followed by the 2006 film Dead Man's Chest. At World's End is directed by Gore Verbinski, the director of the previous two films. The film's cast includes returnees Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, Bill Nighy, Geoffrey Rush, and Jack Davenport. Chow Yun-Fat makes his first appearance in the franchise as one of the film's antagonists. Disney has announced a global release date of May 25, 2007.
Plot
At the end of Dead Man's Chest, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann, and their company find refuge with Tia Dalma, who offers them the opportunity to embark on a journey to rescue Captain Jack Sparrow from his watery grave. Tia Dalma announces the need for a captain that will guide them to "World's End", prompting the appearance of Captain Barbossa, believed to have been dead. The film then concluded.
Johnny Depp has said Jack Sparrow is confronted with many separate aspects of his character in Davy Jones' Locker. Tia Dalma helps the crew to rescue Sparrow. Sparrow and Barbossa also team up with Sao Feng. According to director Gore Verbinski, "Piracy itself is at stake. It's like the railroad coming to the West. There will be a conference of the world's pirate leaders and a treacherous journey to the literal 'World's End'. The meeting is known as the Brethren of the Coast, consisting of nine pirate lords.
Concept art for the film shows an enormous waterfall, a whirlpool and a town made up of ship parts.
Production
Parts of the third film were shot during location filming of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest in 2005. A tank was used in the Bahamas for scenes involving the ships, during which most of the film takes place. Production of Dead Man's Chest ended March 2006. Shooting was unusual in that whilst shooting the film, the writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio had not finished the script, and instead a temporary one was used. According to the writers, the rushing helped the actors give real surprise to their performances. The first fifty-seven pages of this early version were leaked onto the Internet and were taken down by Disney. Co-writer Ted Elliott stated on Disney's official Pirates of the Caribbean message board that "there's already significant differences" between the early draft and actual shooting.
Filming of the third film resumed August 3 2006 and is scheduled to continue until early 2007 for 70 days off the coast of California. Locations included the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah and Niagara Falls. A Disney representative denied that At World's End would be the title of the third film in July 2006, but on August 31 2006 Terry Rossio confirmed that, after all, the third film's title would be At Worlds End. The official teaser poster revealed that the title would have an apostrophe, i.e. At World's End.
A particular contention point of the film has been the presence of Keith Richards, part of Johnny Depp's inspiration for the role of Captain Jack Sparrow, as the character's father: Grant Sparrow. Richards was finally confirmed by Verbinski to be joining the third film on June 23 2006. According to Bill Nighy, Richards filmed his cameo drunk and had to be held up during takes by Gore Verbinski.
According to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, filming finished in January 2007. The first cut of the film was three hours.

- Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow: Having been swallowed by the Kraken, Sparrow is to spend an eternity in Davy Jones' Locker. That is until a rescue party arrives.
- Orlando Bloom as Will Turner: A blacksmith turned pirate, and son of a pirate himself.
- Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann: A governor's daughter, engaged to Turner, although the relationship became questionable at the end of the previous film. She also engages often in piracy herself.

- Keith Richards as Captain Grant Sparrow: Jack's father.
- Dominic Scott Kay in an unconfirmed role.
Promotion
At the 2006 San Diego Comic-Con International, two minutes of footage was shown including Captain Jack Sparrow having to convince the crew to run back and forth on the shipdeck to rock a ship over and a fight between Sparrow and Davy Jones on top of a crow's nest in a storm.
Merchandise
Action figures are set for release in late April.
Sequel
Screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio have said they can only focus on creating a trilogy from the first film, and look forward to finishing the sequels. They do admit whilst a fourth film may happen, it is more likely that "for right now, the trilogy is designed to come to a conclusion". Johnny Depp stated that he would love to play Jack Sparrow for another trilogy "if they had a good script".
In February 2007, after filming was completed, Terry Rossio said they may try to write a screenplay, though "It's like the fourth Indiana Jones picture - there are forces in play to make it happen, and forces in play to make it not happen."
