On September 4, 2022, a stabbing spree occurred in thirteen locations on the James Smith Cree Nation and in Weldon, Saskatchewan, Canada, killing 10 people and hospitalizing 15 others. It is one of the deadliest massacres in Canadian history.
Police are seeking two fugitives: 31-year-old Damien Sanderson and 30-year-old Myles Sanderson. Alerts relating to the incidents were initially issued to Saskatchewan and later extended to Manitoba and Alberta. Some of the victims are believed to have been targeted, while others were randomly attacked.
Attacks
According to Saskatchewan's Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) commanding officer Rhonda Blackmore, a motive for the stabbings is unclear. The two suspects may have targeted some victims, while others appear to have been attacked randomly. Blackmore said the first attack occurred at 5:40 a.m. CST, with subsequent emergency calls reporting more stabbings.
Dead and injured victims were found at 13 locations in the James Smith Cree Nation, a reserve with a population of about 3,400, and Weldon, a village with a population of 200.
Suspects
The two suspects wanted in connection to the stabbings were identified as Damien Sanderson, 31, and Myles-Brandon Sanderson, 30. They were believed to be driving a black Nissan Rogue with the Saskatchewan plate number 119 MPI, and were reportedly seen in Melfort and the Arcola Avenue area of Regina. They are armed and dangerous according to the RCMP. It is unknown where the suspects may be going, or if they changed vehicles since the last known sighting of them.
Emergency response
STARS medical helicopters and ambulances were dispatched to triage and transport wounded victims to hospitals. Fifteen injured victims were reported, but there may be others who took themselves to hospitals.
At 7:12 a.m. CST, the RCMP issued an emergency alert within the region, advising residents to stay in secure locations and to use caution when allowing others into their homes. It also alerted citizens not to approach the suspects and instead report them to 9-1-1. At 8:20 a.m. CST, the alert was re-issued province-wide with information on the suspects' vehicle. At the request of the Saskatchewan RCMP, the alert was later expanded to include all of Alberta and Manitoba. Police checkpoints were established between Regina and Prince Albert.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority initiated a code orange, issuing additional staff in hospitals local to the stabbings to help with the influx of patients. This was later declared over, as the influx of new patients had subsided.
At 12:00 p.m. CST, the Joints Chiefs and Councils of the James Smith Cree Nation declared a local state of emergency, effective until 5:00 p.m. CST on September 30. Additionally, the community set up two emergency operation centres.
The attacks occurred on the same day as the Saskatchewan Roughriders' annual Canadian Football League rivalry game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Extra police officers were deployed to Mosaic Stadium.
Reactions
Premier of Saskatchewan Scott Moe said "there are no words to adequately describe the pain and loss caused by this senseless violence." Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the stabbings "horrific and heartbreaking", and said "I'm thinking of those who have lost a loved one and of those who were injured".
