Corrosion of Conformity started as a hardcore punk band in the 1980s. In common with many other exponents of the genre, COC gravitated towards a more metal sound, by the 1990s becoming essentially a metal band. This led to more mainstream acceptance, gained particularly through their big break, opening for Metallica. In their later years, COC began to exhibit a more stoner rock sound.
