John Lindsay Robert Guest (1960-) (Genealogist/Researcher/Author), M. Bus, Grade Dip IR/ HRM, B. Ed, B.A .

John is a member of the Australian Institute of Genealogy Studies (AIGS); and through his original pioneer lineal ancestors to the Colony of South Australia, he was inducted into the Pioneers Association of South Australia (PASA) . He further qualified as a member of the Port Phillip Pioneers Group (PPPG), affiliated and under the auspices of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria (RHSV) .

Guest completed degrees at Curtin University Western Australia, and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (R.M.I.T) in Victoria, Australia. He retired from business after a long career as an executive for Australian education institutes, International Training Australia and Raytheon (USA).

He is the eldest son of Jack Guest (1921-1987) and Norma Irene Guest (1932-2021) , nee Hay. John’s father Jack, is the grandson of Australian setllers, John Kidd Guest (1832-1871) who arrived in Melbourne in March 1857 aboard the ship James Baines and Matilda Guest (1834-1835) nee Connolly, both immigrating from Ireland.

John Kidd Guest (1832-1871) was a successful Draper (Clothier) and Grocer (small chain of stores) in Melbourne and followed in the business footsteps of his father, John Guest, Esquire (1789-1864) of Templemore, County Tipperary Ireland. This John Guest, Esq, 1786-1864, was also a successful draper, grocer, juror of the Crown's court in County Tipperary Ireland and Templemore Town Commissioner .

Since 2018, John L.R. Guest has been actively engaged with the College of Arms and recently the College validated the Guest family's heritage , resulting in him researching and authoring three Guest Family Heritage Books, Volume 1, 2 and 3 . These books contain the families comprehensive set of genealogical and biographical records the College of Arms required to validate John L.R. Guest, and that of his family members bloodlines to Reverend Robert Hallifax 1761-1838, MA, Magdalen College, Oxford . It is this Robert Hallifax who is Guest's 5th maternal great grandfather and the most recent of Guest's matrilineal ancestors listed within the College of Arms, Hallifax Registered Pedigree, transcript, "MS 7D14/45", 16th December 1788.

The three volumes which constitute his original work are now preserved by the State Library of Victoria (SLV) in Melbourne ; State Library of Western Australia (SLWA) in Perth ; and the College of Arms and the Royal Library and Royal Archives in London, UK . Private reading sessions are available by booking with the SLV and SLWA:

  • Guest Family History - Paternal Trace, Volume I.
  • Guest Family History - Maternal Heritage, Volume II.
  • Guest Family History - Supplemental Petition, Volume III.

Guest's contribution to the early biological history of post conquest England

Volume 1 includes an unbroken set of genealogical records the Crown relies from Guest to his 13th great grandparents Gyles and Alice Guest, nee Styles of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire England . The materials take the reader beyond Australia, through Ireland to the Guest families origins in Row Heath, Kings Norton, Worcestershire, circa 1450 .

Guest's maternal cousins, Dennis Keith Lillee (1949-) OA, MBE and Darren John Halifax (1965-), BA assisted in research, and after a comprehensive and cicumspect review by the College of Arms of Guest's (2024) Volume II, Hallifax Maternal Heritage, the bloodlines Volume II contained were deemed valid .

Having established John L.R. Guest's direct descent firstly from Gyles Guest (-1557) and Alice Guest (-1581) nee Styles of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire England with the Crown , and secondly Guest, Lillee and Halifax's direct descent from Queen Margaret of Scotland (1045-1093) and King Malcolm III of Scotland (1031-1093) (et al) , Guest, Lillee and Halifax were invited to continue submitting fresh genealogical evidence of their shared family history to the standard of proof the Crown relied . The evidence was presented in the form of a Supplemental Petition (Volume III) . The Petition was deemed necessary if His Majesty, King Charles III, was to consider declaring the creation of the Earldom of Oxford, 1066/67 for Edgar the Atheling (1051-c1126) by William I (1028-1087) .

Edgar the Atheling, is the brother of Queen Margaret of Scotland (1045-1093) and brother in law of Margaret's husband King Malcolm III of Scotland (1031-1093), and the ancient ancestral great uncle of Guest, Lillee and Halifax .

Prior to submitting the Supplemental Petition on the 24th September 2024, Professor Tom Licence, MA, MPhil, PhD, FHEA, FRHistS, FSA, Professor of Medieval History, University of East Anglia, Senior Research Fellow, Magdalene College, Cambridge was able to confirm that the evidence gathered by John L.R. Guest and subsequently submitted to Crown by his co-petitioners, cousins, Dennis Lillee and Darren Halifax, at a minimum, proved on the balance of probability, that William I did create the Earldom of Oxford perrage title 1066/67, for Edgar the Atheling (1051- c1126) . Edgar is further recognised by the Crown as the last King of Saxon England r. Oct - Dec 1066. . .

The matter of declaring the creation of Earldom of Oxford, December 1066/67 is presently under consideration by King Charles III .
