ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:21, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

My home page.

Good morning I am fairly new to Misplaced Pages and I was wondering if you could take a look at my user page and give some feedback on it and if all the information is alright. Some recommendations would also be appreciated. Thank you :D TocaTheFrog (talk) 10:26, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

@TocaTheFrog: Good Tuesday! There are a couple of things in the Wikitext of version of your user page that I think need tweaking. I would direct you to two resources first.
As per WP:UP#What may I have in my user pages?, your WP:User pages can be whatever you want it to be as long as it does not violate WP:UP#What may I not have in my user pages?. Note that if there is some CSS error, some user, or more likely a WP:BOT may come along & fix it.
Now that said, here are two things that I spotted, the first major, the second minor.
  1. Your headings are different from what MOS:GOODHEAD & MOS:SECTIONHEAD recommend for headings. For example, you used = '''<u>Who am I?</u>''' = & == '''<u>Why am I here?</u>''' ==, whereas the preferred format for page headings would be ==Who am I?== & ==Why am I here?==.
  2. Try not to leave newlines between bullet headings. This creates an almost imperceptible greater spacing between *, but if you are using #, then it will restart your numbering sequence.
I hope this is helpful. Fell free to look at the wikitext of this section to see how I formatted things. Also, you can put any shortcut in the search bar to facilitate getting to the associated page. Peaceray (talk) 16:51, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

Notes

  1. Note that although they are not visable, I am using the HTML code tag to format the code segments & the nowiki Wikitext tag to prevent the code from operating Wikitext formatting.

IP editing issues with an IP you previously blocked.

Good evening to you, Peaceray. I seek your help with a matter concerning an IP you previously blocked, 141.154.49.21. Said IP has removed pertinent news from the Current Events section of the website earlier this evening. I responded by undoing that change, and their response is that they have reverted my change and informed me that "That is not at all how it works, Danegeld".

My change summary stated that "If it's here, then it's relevant." The news item was properly sourced, and I believe that the editor on the end of that change, may have been acting in bad faith, because the edit was about the recognition of the Palestinian state, by Canadian MPs.

I do not know what to do about this, and wondered if this could be (as the last block was set for), a contentious subject, and whether that block prevented the editor from making those changes. It is news, it is current and in my opinion it should be on that page.

Since this isn't the wiki I'm most used to editing, I'd like to ask for advice on how to handle this topic. I recognise it's not every user's "cup of tea", but if it is newsworthy enough that CBC broadcast it, then it's news, isn't it?

Sorry to tie up your talk with this topic, but I hope you can help. Thank you. Dane|Geld

  • The material should be restored & 141.154.49.21 warned with {{uw-ewsoft}} or {{uw-ew}}. It is incumbent upon the disagreeing editors then to try to bring the problem editor to talk pages. I emphasize the WP:BRD & WP:VNT essays (& it helps to mention that they are essays). It is important to work your way through the levels of warnings. Being warned via 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th warnings is important when you are landing complaints on WP:AIV. Really, I should have insisted on it before initially blocking. I would also ask for advice at WP:ANI. I think it would be better to involve another administrator(s) at this point. Peaceray (talk) 05:43, 21 November 2024 (UTC)

Subscriptions auto-archival

It seems I have the serendipity of running into you again! I was looking through a maintenance category and noticed your subscriptions subpage wasn't archiving properly. The specific problem is the |archive= argument isn't set to a valid value. There are a few ways to fix it, but it depends on how you want it to work. If you want it to just create a separate page for every year, you can do the following:

Annual archive solution
{{User:MiszaBot/config
| algo          = old(366d)
| archive       = User talk:Peaceray/Subscriptions/Archive %(year)d
| archiveheader = {{Annual archive}}
}}

This will create each archive with the page title format "User talk:Peaceray/Subscriptions/Archive year" so that {{Annual archive}} will function as a header for each archive page that detects and lists all the years. Alternatively, if you just want to go the common route where you start counting from 1 and continue counting up from there:

Sequential solution
{{User:MiszaBot/config
| algo                = old(366d)
| archive             = User talk:Peaceray/Subscriptions/Archive %(counter)d
| counter             = 1
| maxarchivesize      = 150K
| archiveheader       = {{Archive}}
| minthreadstoarchive = 1
| minthreadsleft      = 4
}}

{{User:ClueBot III/ArchiveThis}} might also be another option, though I'm less familiar. Retro (talk | contribs) 07:58, 26 November 2024 (UTC)

Thanks! I have replaced the malfunctioning code with the Sequential solution. Peaceray (talk) 17:14, 26 November 2024 (UTC)

TPO and redaction at unblock request

Hi, Peaceray, and congrats; didn't realize you just made admin! I noticed this edit at User talk:141.154.49.21 undoing declining a block appeal, after Fathoms Below pointed out the procedural issue involved. A self-revert is normally okay, but this went further than that. I believe in this case your edit was a violation of WP:TPO for two reasons: first, because your decline had already been responded to (namely, by FB), and secondly, because you not only self-reverted, but you removed another editor's comment (FB's), which is not permitted. (Ironically, the only user who could have legitimately removed FB's post is IP 141 themself, per WP:OWNTALK—but note that this does not also apply to the possibility of IP removing *your* post, which would have been excluded by the exception that forbids users from removing declined block appeals.) The way this should have been handled, imho, is that instead of removing your own post, you should have WP:REDACTed it by <s> striking it out </s>, and then <u> adding new, underlined comments </u> to explain the reason for the redaction. Had FB not responded before you changed your mind about the decline, you could have just self-reverted; but not after there was a follow-up comment replying to yours. HTH, and best of luck with the mop! Mathglot (talk) 07:55, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

@Mathglot: Yes, you are correct & I will use the strikethough moving forward. Still new to adminship, so I will inevitably make mistakes while learning my way around. Thank you for your feedback! Peaceray (talk) 17:50, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

Deletion of quotation from Margaret Sanger on Margaret Sanger page

Greetings Peaceray. I'm always glad for constructive criticism; I don't want to overlook things. To assist me in not making such a mistake in the future, can you tell me where on the Margaret Sanger page it is that "if you had truely read the full article, would have seen that the fuller (& correct quote) was already in . . ." (reference given). I looked at that reference and didn't find it. I did a text search for the phrase "her goal was to eliminate the Negro race" that was in my quote in didn't find it; yet you said I would find it if I read the full article. I want to be a better, and fair, contributor to Misplaced Pages. To that end, can you tell me what I am doing wrong so that I missed the quote that you said was there, on the Sanger page? Chronic2 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 16:34, 13 December 2024 (UTC)

@Chronic2: You failed to search for the relevant string where I told you to look. I have further responded to the original thread at User talk:Chronic2#December 2024.

Your question at AIV

Regarding this edit, that "evidently a spambot or a compromised account" is, apparently, one of the choices in the drop-down menu Huggle or Twinkle offers when making the report. A lot of users often don't think too clearly about what that says (and in any event you were right to decline the report). Daniel Case (talk) 18:07, 14 December 2024 (UTC)

@Daniel Case: Thanks! Yes, it seems important to know when to say no, & also to educate errant reporters. I am still learning, as they must be still learning as well. I sometimes wonder if I should also be pinging them, since some of the users might be drive-by reporters. Peaceray (talk) 18:20, 14 December 2024 (UTC)
Yes, sometimes I've done that. I also watch out for people using the drop-down menu for "evidently a vandalism-only account" when they report IPs (of course, the better fix would be to amend the code so that option is not available when an IP is being reported (something beyond my capabilities). Daniel Case (talk) 18:23, 14 December 2024 (UTC)

Reverted edit of article on R

Hi,

You just reverted my edits of the article on R since you interpreted my edits as a "test" that should be performed in the Wiki Sandbox. However, these edits were genuine and not a test. Please restore my edits unless you have any criticism against the contents of the edits.

Best, DoctorAro DoctorAro (talk) 16:27, 15 December 2024 (UTC)

In fact, another editor did that reversion. And I probably should have used the {{uw-mos1}} warning rather than the {{uw-test1}} template. Since you messaged me both here & on your talk page, I have added a more detailed discussion at User talk:DoctorAro#December 2024. Peaceray (talk) 17:21, 15 December 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Suzanne Rouviere

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Suzanne Rouviere requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Misplaced Pages page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Misplaced Pages pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:54, 23 December 2024 (UTC)

About Being Auto-Confirmed

Hi, I have been in Misplaced Pages for 6 months. I just recently saw the User Access Level article and am wondering if I am eligible to be auto-confirmed. I would be grateful if you have a tour on my user page and recommend improving that one. Thank you. BlackRider90 (talk) 00:56, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

@BlackRider90: Hi, go to WP:AUTOCONFIRM & the box on the left should indicate whether you are autoconfirmed or not. I will have a look at your user page a bit later. Peaceray (talk) 02:10, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
Yeah, I see a box on the left side. Is it showing only for me or it is attched to the article for everyone? BlackRider90 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 02:48, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
@BlackRider90: It shows for everybody but the text will vary whether you are autoconfirmed or not. If it says you are autoconfirmed, you are.
You can also check your stats at xtools.wmcloud.org/ec/en.wikipedia.org/BlackRider90. I see that autoconfirmed is part of your user group.
Finally, you should always sign you posts with ~~~~ – if you want to customize your signature, have a look at WP:Signature tutorial & WP:Signatures. Peaceray (talk) 05:51, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
Oh, thank you, and can I add the "autoconfirmed" ribbon in my user page?BlackRider90 (talk) 16:22, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
Sure! Peaceray (talk) 16:24, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

Sterling Holloway

His birthday is wrong . I have proof. thanks.. Tater1211 (talk) 11:58, 7 January 2025 (UTC)

@Tater1211: You are correct & I was wrong. I fell prey to reverting unexplained changes (no edit summary) without changes in citations, but I failed to check the existing citations.
I have added an explanatory footnote, rather than a HTML comment, to help me & others to avoid the same mistake in the future. I have also switched the preferred & deprecated birth dates at Sterling Holloway (Q725507) in Wikidata so that the preferred value appears first. Peaceray (talk) 20:29, 7 January 2025 (UTC)

Native Hawai'ian

Hi, you left me a message about a previous edit and I wanted to state why I did so. The Native Hawaiians page inconsistently uses the 'okina in spellings involving Hawai'i (alot don't have it but then there are other sections that with spellings that use it, making the article look less encyclopedic. I figured I just would add some to spellings of it since the article does use the standard spellings for other Indigenous Hawai'ian words, but must've accidentally added a few to article links. Aside from that my main reason for posting was updating some years info I noticed hadn't been added. I've just added the info without the additional 'okinas to other sections. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mwatuangi (talkcontribs) 07:52, 8 January 2025 (UTC)

@Mwatuangi: That is fine, & I generally support the use of ʻokinas where appropriate. However, maintaining valid URLs for citations is sacrosanct & it is the responsibility of editors to maintain their validity & quickly restore then as necessary. That is why I reverted your otherwise proper edits. Please take care in the future not to invalidate URLs through negligence.
Incidentally, you can use the {{okina}} template to produce the ʻokina if you are not able do a copy and paste. Peaceray (talk) 17:19, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
