Plot summary
Template:Spoiler When Earth's embassy on Vulcan is bombed, DNA evidence points to the culprits being the Syrranites, a group that follows a revolutionary interpretation of the teachings of Surak, the father of Vulcan logic. After T'Pol receives a clandestine lead, she and Archer embark upon a treacherous journey through the Vulcan desert to look for them. Back on the Enterprise, Dr. Phlox discovers that the DNA was planted. He and Trip then examine the tape of security camera near a checkpoint in the embassy and single out the man who had the bomb. Furthermore they notice that the guard at the checkpoint seems to already know who the bomber is. Unfortunately, the guard is in a coma from the blast. While it violates Vulcan ethics, Phlox and Trip convince Soval, a Vulcan ambassador who was nearly killed in the blast, to perform a mind meld with the guard. To Soval's surprise, he discovers that the real bomber is Stel, a Vulcan security officer. They confront Stel and his superior, V'Las, who is also the head of the Vulcan High Command. Stel agrees to testify. On Vulcan, Archer and T'Pol encounter another traveler who is distrustful of them. A sand-fire storm kills the other traveler, but before he dies, the traveler performs a mind-meld with Archer. It is later revealed that the traveler is Syrran himself. When Archer and T'Pol reach the Syrranite alcove, they are held at knife-point.

Trivia
- The first question that Arev asks Archer to determine if his story checks out is "Who said 'Logic is the cement of our civilization, with which we ascend from chaos, using reason as our guide'?". This is the first question that the computer asks during Spock's memory tests at the beginning of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
- Soval said, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." This phrase was originally used in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
- This episode has a few references to the Animated Series episode "Yesteryear", and features the first appearance of Spock's pet outside that episode (this time as a CGI object).
