Visakhapatnam airport in Visakhapatnam, India is a domestic airport. An international airport has been planned by the year 2008.

Domestic airport

At present, the domestic airlines operating at the airport include Indian, Air Sahara, Kingfisher Airlines, Air Deccan,Paramount Airways and Alliance Air (a subsidiary of India). Jet Airways is expected start flights from Hyderabad and Kolkata in the first half of 2007. Other domestic airlines that have shown interest include Go Air and IndiGo Airlines. Silk Air & Srilankan Airways have also expressed interest to start services once the International airport is ready in the city.

Planned International Airport

The newly constructed 10000-feet runway work has been completed and was inagurated on June 15 2007. The terminal will have all modern facilities and is expected to be ready for use by the second quarter of 2007. The Instrument Landing System is calibrated and it is now ready to use. The night landing facilities are also instakked and would be used once the ILS is calibrated and ready to use. A new integrated terminal would constructed at a cost of Rs 95 crore. The construction is being done by M. Venkat Rao Construction Co.

The apron is being built to accommodate at least six wide-bodied aircraft like Boeing 767s and its equivalent variants at the same time.

Many of the international airlines have expressed their regards to start from Visakhapatnam, once the facilities have been completed. As Visakhapatnam is situated on the east coast of India, it is nearer to Bangkok, Singapore, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City etc. Many airlines such as Silk Airways, Thai Airways International, Sri Lankan Airways, Malaysian Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Lufthansa, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Emirates, Royal Nepal Airlines, Biman Bangladesh Airlines and Air India have shown interest in the airport.

New Runway

Indian Union Minister of State for Mines T Subbirami Reddy inaugurated the newly constructed 10,000 foot long and 60 meter wide runway at the Vizag Airport on June 15, 2007.
