While Chewie is perfectly able to understand 'Basic', he is unable to speak it due to his facial structure. He communicates with Han Solo using his own language, Wookiee, while Solo always speaks to Chewie in Basic (see Languages in Star Wars).
In the Star Wars Holiday Special, Chewbacca has a family (wife Mallatobuck and son Lumpawarrump) on Kashyyyk, his homeworld. With other major Star Wars characters, he visits them on Life Day. His family also appears in some of the novels.
