WCW vs. The World is a wrestling game that was released in 1997 for the Sony PlayStation video game console. It was the first game developed by Aki Corporation to be released outside of Japan. To date, the game has sold over 500,000 copies.

Featured wrestlers

Since the game is the North American version of Japanese wrestling title Virtual Pro Wrestling, each of the "fictional" wrestlers in the game are actually based on real-life wrestlers. Only their names were changed due to American copyright laws.

Territories

As the title suggests, the player must select a wrestler of a certain company to do battle with the representatives of their own company, as well as other wrestling companies. Here are the territories as they appear in the game:

  • World Championship Wrestling (WCW): The wrestlers of WCW (signified by the color red in the character select screen) are possibly the most plentiful, and are usually the most selected of the playable characters.

WCW's representative wrestler is "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan, and WCW's unlockable secret character is Jeff Jarrett.

  • Neo-Strong Wrestling (NSW): The wrestlers of NSW (signified by the color purple in the character select screen) are billed as wrestlers that engage in Martial Arts tournaments by virtue of their wrestling skills.

NSW's representative wrestler is Dojo, and NSW's unlockable secret character is .

  • Empire Wrestling Federation (EWF):
  • Samurai Wrestling Federation (SWF):
  • Dead or Alive Wrestling (DOA):
  • Independent Union Wrestling (IUW):
  • Virtual Pro Wrestling (VPW): This is a secret federation within the game that can be reached once the championships from the other territories have been unified.

Trivia

  • Although many prevalent WCW stars of the time were featured, the game's cover art features three wrestlers that aren't actually included in the game's roster: "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, Diamond Dallas Page and Chris Jericho.
  • Pressing the START button instead of the X button can give characters alternate attires. In some cases, certain characters revert to past versions of their personas (for example, pressing START can turn the NWO "Hollywood" Hogan into the yellow-and-red "Hulk" Hogan, or pressing START can turn the black-and-white 90s Sting into the multi-colored, blonde-haired 80s Sting).
