Hiroshima was founded in 1589, on the coast of the Seto inland sea, and became a major urban center during the Meiji period.
Area: 741.63 km; population (October 2000): 1,126,282.
After the atomic bombing, Hiroshima was rebuilt as a "peace memorial city." The city government continues to advocate for the abolition of nuclear weapons, and more broadly for world peace.
