Bruce Ismay.H arrland and Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland built it in a makeshift shipyard (as Titanic and Olympic were to large for the conventional shipyard of the time). The White Star Line was owned by John Pierpont Morgan. Lord Pieere headed White Star and his nephew Thomas Andrews designed the great ship. Titanic had 2 sister ships Olympic (completed several months before Titanic) and the Britannic (which built in 1914 was sunk by a German mine during World War One). Titanic, completed 1912 was 47,000 tonnes, slightly larger then Olympic. She was launched successfully save the fact that one worker was crushed by a falling support. It was only the second death during building with the other death being a worker died while building the hull was going on. Contary to popular belief, a worker was NOT trapped in Titanic's hull. When the madien voyage was underway on May 1912 a near disaster occured when the New York (a small American steamer that was in harbour due to a coal strike)snapped its teather lines because of Titanic water pull at the ships stern* (back end) and nearly hit Tianic. The incident was taken by some as an omen. The Titanic was declared by some newspapers as unsinkable, however the builders or other people closly tied with the ship had never claimed such a thing. So the world largest ocean liner* (ship) left Southampton, Britian and headed off to Cherbough, France then to Queenstown, (now called Cohb) Ireland. When she was heading to New York on April 14,1912 at 11:45 p.m. under Captin Edward J(ohn) Smith the Titanic's port* side (left side). The damage was very small (not the popular "300 foot gash" myth). The beahemoth began to slowly sink. The lifeboats were loaded (most half full) and lowered in to the frigid North Atlantic waters. Wireless operators Jack Phillips and Harold Bride franticly sent S.O.S. , the first ship in history to do so. Olympic (yes the other big one), Mount Temple and Carpathia are a couple of the many ships who reponded. The Carpathia, in the same ice field as Titanic raced to the rescue as Titanic was 58 miles away. Carpathias normal speed was 11 knots* and top speed was 14 knots* but Arthur Rostron (Carpathia's captin) was so dedicated as was the crew, the ship was going 171 and a half knots*.The crew was later given awards and a very special one presnted to Arthur Rostron for his heroics that fateful night/morning. The Calaforian a carco ship was on the horizon but the captin (Stanley Lord) didn't heed Titanic's distress rockets. The wireless operator was actually asleep and no one woke him up! When Titanic had sunk the passengers in the lifeboats were pick up by Carpathia. Of the 2,227 on the ship 705 were rescued whilst 1,523 souls perished the night when Titanic went down. Requiescant Titanic in pace.
