The character is an Italian speaking mouse who lives on Isola dei Topi (the Island of Mice) and works as a journalist for the fictional newspaper L'Eco del Roditore, or "The Rodent's Gazette". He has a sister named Thea Stilton and a cousin named Trap Stilton, and his favourite nephew, Benjamin. Geronimo is a nervous, mild-mannered mouse who would like nothing better than to live a quiet life, but he keeps getting involved in far-away adventures with Thea, Trap and Benjamin.
The books, which originate in Italy and are available in English and French translations, are written as though they are autobiographical adventure stories. The author is identified only as Geronimo Stilton, and references are occasionally made to past and future books in the series.
The English-language titles in the series, as of June 2005, are:
- Lost Treasure of the Emerald Eye
- The Curse of the Cheese Pyramid
- Cat and Mouse in a Haunted House
